Description A male Northern White-Lipped Python(Leiopython albertisii) that I recently acquired, a stunningly beautiful and sweet guy if I must say so.  Believe it or not, he's in shed in this picture and is comparatively dull.  Yes, White-Lips really DO refract light like this and are among the most-iridescent of all snakes.  This fellow, yet-un-named, is roughly six feet long, average size for a male of this species.  For a long time, all White-Lips were classified as a single species, but recent DNA analysis has prompted taxonomists to split the genus, Leiopython, into six different species.  This species, also known as a D'Albert's Python, is the most common in captivity.  Most specimens in the US are wild-caught imports, often riddled with scars from the rough treatment they receive from captors, who are actually bringing the snakes back to the villages for the stew pot.  Animal dealers/exporters show up to barter for the better-looking specimens to sell to zoological institutes and animal breeders overseas.  This fellow appears to be a rare captive-bred specimen, however, and is flawless, not a mark on him.  Captive breeding of these snakes is rare due to their bad reputation as aggressive, difficult animals, and to their tendency to cannibalize one another.  They are not a "beginner's snake" by any means, comparable to the Green Tree Pythons(genus Chondropython) in care level, but are a very rewarding, and unusually intelligent(for a snake) animal to work with.
