Description This is also an older rendering of the gears on Myst Island, I had a little trouble solving its design and working out how the teeth were functioning in the images. Spent a long time actually coming up with a solution since the original images weren't very informative. I'll make sure to upload a more recent image soon.

Hey, I was working on a HL2 mod for Myst Island, and, the visual thinker that I am, I studied the gears myself (in realMyst) and figured out that
A) They have 9 teeth
B) The opening for the book is a 135-degree cut. I knew this by looking at the model in the clocktower.
I haven't been able to do anything with this mod currently because Valve outmoded some of its file formats.

Hey thanks for the feed back Yeah there is definitely supposed to be 9 and you can even see that from the top down view of the gears; the Mysterium unseen 11 photo. Pretty neat that you have made a mod for Half-life, just a shame that Valve outmoded its files. There's a good reason why I chose 10 over 9 I assure you and it was engineering; there's a platform that holds the book but is independent of the gear itself and suspends itself below the rotational axis on metal supports that you can see clamped to rods; It has to be independent as it can't be a tooth on the gear because when you see the gear open with a tooth aiming upwards 9 teeth won't allow for a perfectly horizontal platform to stand on. You could say sure, maybe the gear has an extra extended part that is hidden but allows for a flat surface like that, but then if you look at the pictures you see the ratchet teeth that the gear rotates on, two golden ratchets but they are inside the gear which means the motor will need to be as well. The platform lowers as the gear turns but they never had to worry about showing this part in the game because by the time you would get to the gear it had already rotated open when you were at the clock tower, the reason I know this is because when the gear closes, its teeth have to aim into the floor where the platform would be. The land area of the gear is just too short to allow a bridge to extend out but besides this; you can see in the images that the frame that extends up to hold the book is behind the axis and wouldn't function that way anyway. You can see the book holder is on an axle that is gravity countering so that when the frame work contorts inside the gear it keeps the book horizontal so it doesn't slip off. If you have 9 teeth it will bump into the mechanism that holds the platform out. but with 10 you can get a pretty close representation of what the gear looks like from the original game, allow for the mechanism to fit that lowers the platform and it has enough size to hide any air gaps around the slot the gear sits inside with just enough room left for two arms to reach in and suspend a motor. So I chose engineering realism over the original design and everything just fit with a hairs width of space free. But you are right there is supposed to be 9. The only other possible solution to this would be that the ratchet mechanism is fake, that there is an extended part to make a horizontal platform and that the floor is actually attached to the gear inside, the book does gravity counter to stay horizontal and that there is a big gear on a motor under the ground that latches into the teeth of the gear and that is what rotates it, but for fun I made the complicated idea work in Maya hehe. But I will still make a 9 toothed variation for original sake.

Any chance you could release this model?

It may be possible, I'll need to review the Cyan's third party asset usage rules and I'll get back to you.
