Shining blue eyes of a druid were fixed to the chin of a grey folk, their claws fiddling with nuts and bolts of a newly-modeled prosthetic. With a big toothy grin, they leaned back to admire their handiwork. She let out a giggle before picking up a mirror leaning against the wall and setting it on the blue-green wooden workbench she had set up. It was covered in miscellaneous half-finished contraptions and machines. With an ear-to-ear smile she tilted the mirror towards her most recent subject, and peered through their goggles with an expecting look.
“Well? Whatddya think? It's perfect, right!?” Winnie Sprocket exclaimed. “C’mon, give it a shot! Say something!”
“...”
The grey folk just stared at their own reflection. A metallic plate covered what once was a nose and mouth, with black piping leading into two metal notches on their neck. A speaker could be seen connecting the two notches. The whole prosthetic was capped off on the folks chest with another metal plate, a notch cut out of it to make space for the exposed black gem on their chest.
“...”
Say something…
How would he even go about doing that..? Speaking is the act of emitting an auditory tone from a larynx and into the mouth, to shape how it sounds. How do they produce the auditory tone?
Tears began to well up in their eyes. The delight they held from beginning to look… Normal… Right… Like they were supposed to… Mechanical and clean. It was beautiful. And then they noticed the water in their eyes. Familiar frustration and confusion bubbled up once again and began to taint the moment- and that’s when they let out a cry.
A hideous sounding yell, one might just call garbage noise, blared from the speaker- it filled the air of the room, only growing in volume due to the grey folk not knowing where it was coming from-
“HEY hey hey hey- okay- calm down… lets not start with that then…” Winnie interrupted.
“Hm…. the doctors said you liked to follow orders- so, why don't you repeat after me?” The druid smiled enthusiastically at their brilliant plan, and all the other folk could do was nod.
“Lets see here… Today is Monday. Can you manage that?”
“Lets see here. Today is Monday. Can you manage that.”
As soon as Winnie finished her question a mechanical and monotone echo of it came from the grey folk and her eyes lit up.
“YAAY! It works! Um… Okay- “
“Yay. It works. Um. Okay.“
“Hey waitaminit-”
“Hey wait a minute.”
“Stop.”
“...”
“You’re an interesting fellow…” Winnie commented, before pulling up a stool and sitting at her workbench. She tilted her head and stared at the disheveled folk in curiosity. “Maybe… Hmm…. You’re a traveler… Hey, can you tell me what you did in your previous life?”
“..."
“Designation: XP-08; Function: Data Collection:”
“Aha! That’s it! I dunno much about how you sorts work but it sounds like you were plucked up as a non-living thing… Oooooh that’s so interesting! Dr. Dooley and Doctor V are gonna have a blast with youuuu.” Winnie grinned. Her claws tapped excitedly on her desk, as she thought about what he said a bit more. “XP-08…. You’ve gotta have had a codename- no project goes without a fun codename.”
“...”
“Hey, cmon! You’re alive now- whaddya wanna do?”
“...”
“Error:”
“Ahhh… you’ve got a ton of work to do, huh…. Well… how about this- everyone needs a name. Don’t go around telling people whatever number-name you had, alright?” the druid commanded. She paused for a moment more, with her eyes narrowing behind golden goggles.
“...Order confirmed…”
“OH shoot okay- Well, um… There's this old world myth I remember hearing… Something about an inventor? He built some cool things supposedly, like puzzles and mazes- He even built a pair of working wings! Isn’t that *cool*?”
No response.
“Hah- doesn’t hurt to try.” Winnie continued. “His name was uhh. Daedalus? Yeah, that sounds right. So I’m gonna give you the same name! Daedalus… Man that sounds so cool. OOOH wait I wonder if you’ve got any cool knowledge from your old world! WAIT- I can't get that from you yet though- I got other folk I need to see first. Hey, when you aren’t busy being prodded at would you mind stopping back here and having a chat?”
Daedalus stared at Winnie, still attempting to comprehend the idea of a name. A name… Names are a word given to a noun used to designate a shorthand referral to the given noun.
“...”
“Order confirmed.”
