Description Despair, Desire's sister and twin, is queen of her own bleak bourne. It is said that scattered through
Despair's domain are a multitude of tiny windows, hanging in the void. Each window looks out on a
different scene, being, in our world, a mirror. Sometimes you will look into a mirror and feel the
eyes of Despair upon you, feel her hook catch and snag upon your heart.

Her skin is cold, and clammy; her eyes are the colour of sky, on the grey, wet days that leach the world of colour and meaning; her voice is little more than a whisper, and while she has no odour, her shadow smells musky and pungent, like the skin of a snake.

Despair says little, and is patient.

Hmm. Pity. The series seemed promising with Delirium, which was a very nice start.. but neither Death nor Despair seem anything like their Gaimanish counterparts at all. You will, of course, remember that Despair is very fat and always has her hair tightly together in a knot over her head. Just trying to find stocks for that would probably be too difficult. You'll need to find proper models to make this series come true. I can see why you (apparently?) gave up. At least I could only find these three in your gallery.

Unfortunately you are right. To try and pay Gaiman a tribute is just very hard and currently I don't have the time and the resources to devote to it. I'm semi-satisfied with the three I submitted so far, Death and Despair don't really represent the original characters as much, but baisically it's my take on their main traits and the feelings they convey... I hope to finish this series at some point when I hope to have chanve to actually shoot the proper "models" that are required... Thanks for a honest and thoughtful comment!!

Cheers, Cliff.

ps: and sorry for taking forever to answer, but I'm currently working my ass off on the wrong side of the world so I didn't have too much time for devart

Hey, I hope she isn't cruel to the poor mouse/rat!
Very interesting piece of work again...a piece that makes me think and want to learn more about its constituents. The fogs of despair...the remind me of X-ray pics of bones...mere chance or intention?

Pixelcoma In reply to marble911 [2003-10-17 12:03:22 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... well... In that case ask Andy about what she does with the rat...

X-ray pics of bones? Very cool, but I must admitt its more chance and not intention...

Despair...I always wondered how Despair and Desire could be twins...but then again...not.
All those windows...I would like to look through them...and see that I'm not the only one who is caught in the net of Despair...
The rat...I really enjoy how you add those little but very crucial details to your pieces. All those rats...and the fog...on the earth...covering her feet...and the rats...
Despair is beautiful in this piece...but the look on her face...is just right...that'S Despair...using her hook to capture the next victim...

Pixelcoma In reply to greenfaery [2003-10-16 07:39:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I think all those little details really make the characters unique.. The only thing I left out was the hooked ring, but that would have cluttered the image to much... Don't worry you're definately not the only one caught in her net, but I think we're on our way out of it we'll just escape into dreams realm... It's really very cool to have someone who understands all the details

It's really cool that there's someone who really adds the details to the pieces in such an artistic way...they are there but not too much in your face...just there so that someone who knows about them can notice.

well done - a "little" higher res so one could use it as full-size wallpaper would've been nice but i guess the resolutions of the various pics didn't allow it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pixelcoma In reply to sh4dow [2003-10-16 07:21:15 +0000 UTC]

Hmm...

Actually I never thought of that.. Maybe I'll do a wallpaper version... I think the pics were all ok size wise to do that... Generally I don't like to have too big pics, they get ripped to often

Thanks for the comment!

sh4dow In reply to Pixelcoma [2003-10-16 18:56:25 +0000 UTC]

pfff... would you know if one of your pics gets ripped? personally, i think i wouldn't so i don't care ... and i think neither should you because if everybody thought like that who would create lovely high resolution pics then?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pixelcoma In reply to sh4dow [2003-10-17 12:41:37 +0000 UTC]

True, but the other reason they are this size is that it fits nicely onto my homepage if I ever get round to updating that... and since many people still work on smaller resultions than us on our 20" Monitors I tend to keep the pictures smaller so that they can also enjoy them... In reality this translates into I'm to lazy to make two sizes

sh4dow In reply to Pixelcoma [2003-10-17 14:31:16 +0000 UTC]

uhm... i think everyone who knows just a little about pcs knows a way to reduce an image's resolution - and if someone can't do it... well i don't really think that's my problem.
but of course i see your point - that's why i've made all my wallpapers in 1280x960 (before i made the step to 1600x1200) and reduced the resolution to 1024x768 and 800x600 and put those 3 versions on my site...

Best stock I found to suit the pic... If you wanna provide a more "despaired" pic I'll manip it but all in all I think it worked out ok... Thanks for the comment!

sombersoul [2003-10-15 13:36:13 +0000 UTC]

Despair looks kind of arrogant. And what is she doing to little mousey?

You've achieved a good effect with the B/W vs. (moderate) colour contrast. What are the white streaks in the background? They look like fire or smoke somehow. I like the idea with the mirrors (as described in the text and as realized in your picture). I'll hang white cloths all over my mirrors now.

Pixelcoma In reply to sombersoul [2003-10-16 07:16:54 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... Maybe not the best model for despair, but it's the best I found in the stock section and since I currently have no-one to photograph it'll have to do... All in all I think it worked out quite allright

Reread your Sandman when delirium visits despair to go look for destruction that's more or less the scene this is based on... The smoke should be the "fog of despair"...

Yup, mirrors are evil...

Thanks!
