Finally finished with the first of a series of Phantasy Star illustrations I'm creating for my three siblings for Christmas! While I will make framed prints of all three for them, one of each of these pictures will be a secret to one of the siblings, so that they know what two of them are, but not the third. Did that sound convoluted? Hope not, but then again I'm not good at explaining the methods to my madness lol.

I picked the classic Phantasy Star universe because we grew up on Sega Master System and Genesis as kids, and this underappreciated RPG series has always stuck with me as a creative influence with its' hybrid fantasy/sci-fi setting. The third game in the classic series is a bit of a black sheep because it was developed by a different team, and therefore feels much more different from the other games in the series. Canonically, it takes place after Phantasy Star 1 and somewhat during 2 and 4...technically. This one leans more into the fantasy rather than the sci-fi aspect initially, and that's cool. But it's most interesting feature is that you play as Prince Rhys, whom is on a typical quest to save his kidnapped fiancee...but then has the choice to marry her or someone else. Their children grow up and continue the adventure, and they end up procreating with someone else and THEIR children finish the quest. Thus, the name Generations of Doom.

It had a lot of interesting ideas and inspired me creatively despite it's graphics, gameplay and soundtrack being somewhat unideal. The idea of climate-controlled spaceships with eco systems, ancient heroes being manipulated into conflict with one another by eldritch god-mutants and intergalactic travel rolled into an RPG really enthralled me as an artist. PS3 holds a special place in my creative nucleus and many of my stories and concepts spring from this title especially.
