To tell you the truth, I was never too fond of the Arcobaleno (except for Fon, Luce, Aria and Yuni - very calming and lovely characters), but I agree that I wish Amano had given us more information on them. ): Just a shame the manga got cancelled before she had the opportunity.Β

Mmmh, but you have to remember that three of those four occupied the same position and are incredibly similar people, so it's also arguable that I just like two of the Arcobaleno. Hmmm... I'm not sure that that would made such a big difference. I mean, the problem wasn't exactly the plot; more that the characterisation got a little skewed due to all the unnecessary power-ups, which made things too easy, and the fact that story telling was replaced by a bunch of tedious battles that didn't allow KHR to readily differentiate from its competitor mangas.Β

Very true. It's a type of problem we all grow out of when we look at Shonen manga in hindsight: most of it is power-centered, drawing from the power of youth and very little of it is actually clever, if at all. A few clever examples are Death Note, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Parts 1-5 (though mostly 2 forward), and back when it was still considered "Shonen"), Gintama (though it may have to be taken in some quantities given that most of its humor is directed with regards to a Japanese audience),...well, you get the idea.
Which makes me sad, too, because back when I was still a newcomer to anime and manga, Reborn was my favorite alternative to Bleach (the funny moments were generally better placed), and with the number of power-ups that were introduced, it had so much potential to be clever with its powers and with the themes it introduced. But it's wasted and there's nothing we can do about it. In a way, I still have a soft spot for what it could have become.

I haven't read or seen any of those series, except for Gintama (although I'm very slow at watching it), so I don't feel I can readily comment. Mmmh, but I feel that clever is too vague a term - how exactly does one define clever with regards to a shonen manga, or any manga? Sure, there's a formula, but I think the level of cleverness relates to how it is executed. In that respect, I feel KHR was clever until the Inheritance Ceremony arc. After that, it became somewhat questionable.Β
Think the problem with Bleach is that it tries so hard to take itself seriously and be interesting. Honestly can't wait for it to end - it's long overdue. I've the same soft spot for KHR in its entirety - not just its failed potential.Β

The thing with almost any series you come across is that the good guy defeats the bad guy; in some series like Monster, the bad guy "loses" of his own accord. What then do you look for if you find out in a clever way? You look for possibilities. How is the good guy going to beat the bad guy? Will he do it with brute force? Will he find some weakness of the bad guy's and exploit that? Will he just be luckier than the bad guy? Or will he pull off some kind of unforeseen trick at the edge of death and retake his advantage?
You could always pick up something more interesting and then drop Bleach altogether. Then, once it's finished, you can take your sweet time reading the rest of the chapters or whatever's left of it. There's no use anticipating something you've already lost hope in, after all.
