Description This is from the same 'shoot' as Smooth Passage[link] Actually I took this one first, and decided to get in close to the water.

I have done some editing in Photoshop (I'll get the hang of it eventually).

I'd love to know what better I can do in photoshop on this, if anything. I don't want to over-process this though. I think it needs to be simple.

Glen Affric near Loch Affric. Taken in Jan/Feb.

The smooth rush of water is in incredible contrast to the stillness of the trees (...and of the bridge, but it would be worrying if that moved ).
Just out of curiosity: was the camera on long-exposure, or did you smooth the water in Photoshop?
By the way - you need to take out the full-stop at the end of the link in the Artist's Comments: the link's not working.

Thanks for your comments! I'm glad you like it.

It was a long exposure...I have to admit my photoshop knowledge is slim, but I prefer to do it on a camera.

Thanks again!

Thank you. I'm really glad you think so...I am quite pleased about this photo for the depth that it has --I think it works better in black and white. Thanks again!

Everything is done well. The sense of flowing water is strong here. It looks very good, and of course the greyscale with a blue hue theme is very atmospheric and mood-inducing.
Very good!

As a lover of black & white photography--other than a soft brush in photoshop; this photo is perfect. Though I'm not a photographer--sooo my feedback may not be what you're looking for

thanks. Where would you use the soft brush?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

THISIZGONNAHURT In reply to pixlepixie [2008-03-25 01:51:03 +0000 UTC]

i would use it around the water, and maybe up top to soften the treeline a lil bit. but that's me...my advice--play with it and use it where you think it should be used and where you think it would look best.

ha ha no worries. I've never done a photomanipulation, and wouldn't even attempt it! I'm just working on the basics now!

hello from

I love this picture. It has just the right amount of time delay, creating that mist-like feeling in the water. My only suggestion would be to lighten those background trees -- give the picture a bit of atmospheric perspective int hat sense, and really make the foreground more dramatic.

pixlepixie In reply to Inqy [2008-03-24 23:37:19 +0000 UTC]

thanks...my only issue...how exactly would I just ligthen the background? It is probably a stupid question

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inqy In reply to pixlepixie [2008-03-24 23:48:40 +0000 UTC]

In photoshop, you should be able to pick a soft brush, a very low opacity, and a light color, and just brush it gently over those trees on a separate layer. Don't do it enough to get rid of the details, just enough to lighten the color a little.

its a nice piece over all but the top part looks pretty good its the bottom that makes it look like a painting or something other then a photo

pixlepixie In reply to ArtistTool [2008-03-24 23:39:51 +0000 UTC]

I don't know much about photography, but as far as your photoshopping goes, I think the picture is lovely. You have a nice range of tones and contrast I like it. The only thing I would have done to it is rotate it slightly counter clockwise.

what to do in PS with? try to increase the contrast before changing it to b&w, and try to change level of some colors, when changing to b&w, it makes great effect!

btw: the "still flowing" river is great!
