Description
Jimmy waited in his classroom for Daniel's uncle to arrive. They had never met before due to that Daniel was new here, but they needed to talk.
It grew later and later until finally, a tall, thin-face man with stylish black glasses and golden, wind-blown hair stumbled into the room with a small, black-haired girl on his hip.
The little girl looked a lot like Daniel besides that her eyes were green and his were a dull brown.
Daniel's uncle, Michael, was dressed in fitted jeans and a polo shirt, his face distraught as he came in, embarrased from tripping. "Mr. Sullivan?"
Jimmy offered a smile and nod, motioning to the seat in front of his desk. "Have a seat, Mr. ...Way?" he asked, offereing a sheepish smile.
The little girl hid her face in her uncle's shoulder, allowing one of her big, round eyes to gaze at the new man before her.
"Call me Mikey, please," Mr. Way smiled kindly, shaking the teacher's hand. "I'm sorry I'm late...I had to pick Misty up from preschool and then Danny was...Well...Anyways," sighing, Mikey shook his head. "I'm sorry I'm late."
"I understand. I'm in no rush, really." Mr. Sullivan chuckled. "You can call me Jimmy. Is this Daniel's younger sister?" he asked, smiling at the toddler.
Nodding, Mikey smiled down at her, saying, "Say hi, Misty...C'mon, he's nice."
Misty gripped Mikey's shirt before wavinig. "Hi..." she said quietly, giving a tiny smile that made her round, freckled cheeks perk up slightly.
Jimmy laughed, giving a wave. "She's adorable." He knew he should address the issue, but he was nervous.
"She is..." Mikey kissed his niece's head before looking at his nephew's teacher with understanding eyes, saying, "He's been acting up?"
"I...yeah. I mean, it isn't the fact that he speaks out or makes comments, it's the fact that...he doesn't even try. I'm very concerned about him. I'm not angry with him, maybe a little less patient, but I'm truly concerned. Does he...show this kind of behavior at home?"
"All the time," Mikey murmured, seeming to be in thought. "I'll talk to him, and I'm sorry he causes problems." He sighed and rubbed his jaw in thought. "When his parents died," he stopped to glance at Misty who was too intrigued with Jimmy's piercing to be listening, "He's been different. That's why they live with me, but...Sometimes, I question if I'm raising them right at all."
Jimmy gave a sympathetic look before nodding. "Everyone deals with death differently. If you don't mind me asking...how long ago did...this happen?" he hesitated.
Misty gently fiddled with her own lip as if wondering if she had a shiny metal ball on it.
Looking down, Mikey shuffled his feet slowly. "A few months ago...It's like...Danny's given up on life. He says that one day we're all gonna die, so why can't he "live it up"? I tried to explain that life should be cherished, and he should try to make the best of it so that he can get somewhere in the future...He doesn't listen, though."
"I really, really wish I could help. But honestly, I don't have a clue about children. Only teaching them," he offered a chuckle.
Suddenly, the shy Misty started reaching for Jimmy. Something she didn't dare do with anyone but Mikey and her brother.
Mikey blinked down at her, holding onto her little body. "No, Misty, don't bother the nice man, okay? Sit still."
Misty gave a quiet whine, opening and closing her hands to show how bad she wanted to see Jimmy.
Jimmy shook his head, laughing. "It's alright. I don't mind. That is, if you don't." he said, looking at Mikey, slowly reaching his arms out for Misty.
Handing his neice over with a big smile, Mikey chuckled softly, saying, "I don't...It's funny, she usually doesn't do this."
"Really?" Jimmy asked as Misty began playing with his spikey hair, smiling up at him. "Huh..." he said with an amused chuckle. "She's a sweety, though."
Mikey nodded as he sat back in his seat, saying again, "I'm sorry about Danny. I promise to talk to him..."
"Thank you. And if there's anything I can do to help, please, don't be afraid to call me. You can try to call the school, but they tend to 'forget' messages. So here's my cell..." he paused to write down his number, sliding the paper to Mikey with a slightly dimpled smile.
"Thanks..." Mikey stuffed the number into his pocket before standing and collecting his neice from the teacher. "If he acts up again, don't hesitate to call me, and I'll come get him."
"No problem. Sorry for the trouble, Mikey." He gave a wave before giving a grin to Misty who giggled, giving a small wave.
"It's no trouble," he smiled at Jimmy softly before waving, leaving the teacher to gather his things up.
As Jimmy had time to think, he couldn't help but adore that smile and that stylish, windblown hair.
There was something about Mr. Way...Mikey.
