The pastillage itself is pale yellow and the orange is airbrushed on, with the feather shapes on the chest and yellow areas on the head masked out with sticky notes beforehand. After peeling that off I applied red gel coloring with a small brush for additional dimension, before the royal icing details.

It's only technically edible... it wouldn't be very good to eat if you tried. Pastillage will break your teeth.

You don't. Pastillage is the flavor of a Necco wafer and hard as a rock. It's for show.
