Dang. Where was this when I needed it? More importantly, where was I when this was made?

I saw a guy here get really critical of belt buckles being done wrong, and because of that *I* started noticing it everywhere. So I can see this being the same kind of thing.
There's one other one. sometimes you see someone draw a rope around the waist with a crotch rope, and there's a "Knot" at the front with three strands going into it. That's impossible. The end of the rope has to come out of the knot somewhere. There's always an even number of strands coming into or out of a knot.

Plasma-dragon In reply to YardleyFootman [2017-05-28 08:28:53 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, even if those strands are short due to being the end of the rope, which is almost never seen.
(Thinking of Mauser btw?)

Great post, I make plenty of these errors myself. Though some of the details I leave out intentionally, in an effort at visual editing- not unlike how photographers will often hide the knots and loose ends as much as possible. The idea being to leave more focus on the face, gesture, or other parts of the composition. While some of these things are a matter of physics, such as the "zero tension suspension," others, I think are a matter of personal taste. In over twenty years of tying up women, I've almost never tied the wrists to the chest harness. In my opinion, once the lady is on her back, she needs to be able to adjust her wrists up and down to be as comfortable as possible. My two cents, if they're worth even that much.

This is more done from the angle of the Japanese boxtie, where everything is one continuous length of rope, extended as needed and when you're doing that there are a series of locks and knots that simply cannot be hidden.

Good stuff! My personal pet peeve is seeing bondage art where the restraints clearly aren't safe (e.g. Ropes tied around the elbows where they can pinch nerves, tightly-arched hogties with ankles tied to wrists instead of a chest harness, etc). I also feel a little weird calling people out about it on their own page, but I also worry that somebody who doesn't know any better is going to emulate something that's actually dangerous.

I'm not an artist at all but I love how insightful this is. Some people might think this is much ado about nothing but this kind of attention to detail only happens when it comes to things that you truly love, and I respect that massively.

Very nice~ Should definitely be a guide for anyone attempting to draw rope bondage. Seen these exact things in several pictures to varying degree (kinda makes me want to go through my rope-work related favorites to see how many I spot! Someone should make this a drinking game~). Well done reference guide. If I ever take up drawing any kinky artwork, I will keep this in mind.

Yeah, I've seen these mistakes pop up. The last one you mentioned is a big pet peeve of mine as well. I get adding knots is hard, but just having the bindings look like hoops slipped in doesn't look right. That's why references are very helpful.

PirateStann In reply to Plasma-dragon [2017-05-27 23:39:37 +0000 UTC]
These are all pretty obvious, at least to anyone who's tied up a real person and not a virtual one (or an action figure/doll).

You've already answer my counterpoint in that comment. Most bondage artists haven't actually tied up a real person.

I'm a dA artist. You expect me to focus on details?
But really--nicely done. I'm actually guilty of shit ropes any time they appear--they're always an afterthought to the figure as if they're part of the costume, so they never TUG anywhere. I should try another bondage-strong pic with all of this stuff in mind. Super helpful!

Plasma-dragon In reply to Vestiphile [2017-05-26 17:16:02 +0000 UTC]
I think that's the root of the issue for a lot of people. They draw the form, then they draw the rope on top, hence all of these problems where the body isn't correctly positioned and the clothing isn't bent in the right ways.

Very interesting. I sometimes thought that the ropework in some drawings seemed somewhat odd, but couldn't really put my finger on it. I'm sure this will help some artists to improve.

I was pretty bad at rope drawing too at the first. Studying lots of real life examples and models made me start to notice the things you mentioned above. Sometimes you can overlook some errors though because the rest of the composed artwork is great.
Nice idea!

It's funny how much more picky I got about drawing ropework once I actually started practicing it in real life. The process of drawing ropes became more about how I'd actually attempt to tie it in real life, rather than haphazardly just piling on what 'looked good'.
Glad to see this floating around!
Would love to see more of this type of thing from you!

That's almost exactly where I'm coming from. I was tying rope for years before I picked up the pen. Much of my motivation to start drawing was "Imma gon draw bondag all proper techn'cal like!" And now here I am.
