It's not a huge part of the movie, they touch on it but it's been confirmed by the creators and it feels a whole lot like a set up for them to explore further in other movies.

well, okay, so classic kim is a gymnast as well as a cheerleader right (a fact which I'm still upset did not make it into the movie 
and for obvious reasons she's not likely to rejoin the other cheerleaders again anytime soon, so logically she's gonna join the gymnastics team
and because trini is a mega gay dork she signs up as well despite having no gymnastic experience whatsoever, so she can hang out with and stare at her girlfriend in a leotard, but kim tutors her one-on-one until she's actually a competent gymnast as well
zack billy and jason are the three mega-obnoxious fans who come to all the girls' gymnastics meets to support their fans and always get thrown out for cheering too loud and jumping up and down in the stands and screaming, the girls are so embarrassed
trini and kim always get in trouble for PDA because trini always wants to kiss her after their routines
and amy jo plays their gymnastics coach
Lionsgate, please give me my lesbian gymnastics power couple in the sequel. I need amy jo to come back as kim's coach, please

uhhh, so we don't want to be pushing the sexualization of canon teenagers. It's not good, the actors may be adults but they're playing kids in the movies, and it's really a problem of teenagers being sexualized because of how main stream media tends to sexualize them in movies and tv. It's a trend that really needs to stop,.
if they wanna bring in gymnastics, sure but if they do it needs to be in a way that shows that they're athletes and should be respected.
I also dont' really see Trini as really getting into gymnastics, but who knows.

I was mostly joking about that part, but you are 100% right about the actual content. I'm hiding what I wrote because it was a stupid thing to say. Let me rephrase what I was saying and be more careful about my actual opinions in the future. It appears sometimes I let my desire for LGBT-women friendly fanservice get in the way of my actual, thought-out, sociopolitical opinions.
I do wish that the movie hadn't been like "girls shouldn't be judged for their bodies, either by guys or by each other" and then also been like "here's a scene of kimberly cliff diving in her underwear, because reasons." That being said, I also kinda wish that there had been a way that they could demonstrate.
I think that's kind of what problem was with the replacing the original sport, in that as opposed to the original Kim who was presented as always an athlete first and foremost, new Kim was more of "the cheerleader" stereotype - not saying that cheerleader's aren't athletic, but that the movie, if it was going to change her sport, could have made sure that it was treated as a sport and not a "standard high school girl cliques who occasionally do back handsprings".
And you're right about Trini, I suppose. Maybe Trini can go to Kim's meets, and Kim can go to Trini's concerts? Since Becky's a singer.
Although to be fair, I think Naomi is too, isn't she?
