Zero had heard the phrase all of their life. From Max, from the house assistants, and at times, they even convinced themself it was true. It didn't matter all that much.
But it never, ever, carried the weight it did when Nimay said it.
They took a step back. Tears burned in their eyes.

Nimay took a moment, seemingly staring through Zero.
The snow died down slightly. The flare in Nimay's eyes dimmed. Part of her seemed to dissipate with the intensity of the storm.

Max had succeeded. The stones were destroyed.

But the fight was not over until the remaining Daneks were dead.

Nimay did not seem to remember where she was for a moment. Zero's chest was tight. The stab wound did not hurt as much as their heart did.

"I... I am not a leech," Zero mumbled.

"You are a leech by very definition."

Their fists clenched, their nails digging into their skin. "I have worked tirelessly for years and years protecting you and Max. I've asked for absolutely nothing in return. I have put down my life for you.

Both of you. Because I care for you. Because you are worth it. Not because you are my sister."

"I am not your sister."

"You are my sister. And I am not giving up on you.
Not until every last one of us is free of this place."
