How to use clipping layers and the coloring lines as well (which is also the clipping layers bit).

Are you going to start doing colorful linearts now?Or hold back on it until you're comfortable or..?

I'm going to experiment with them. They ended up feeling too odd on this one outside of the hair and metal, so that's probably where I'm going to delegate its use to. Like I also posted the full colored lines variant and all black lines variant for reference as well.

And thanks for the compliment, It took me a while to do this (about 6-7 hours due to length of time I need to ink), but I like how it ended up.

Ahh, yes. It does take some time trying to meld into it, yes? Some styles work more easily for others so just take your time!XD I was just curious because I think it would fit well into your style if you progress into it further.

ohh man, that is a LONG time. Totally worth it though, it turned out great!

Yeh, the colored lines didn't take much time, about 30 minutes. That said, I did like it, but the slight difference made everything kind of feel like 'blobs of color', which kind of hurt. I think it's because the lines are so small. If anything I may experiment later with shades of crimson/brown to see if I can get effects that way (Β painfulelegy.deviantart.com/ar… ). I had lowered the value and increased the saturation for each, but as said it kind of detracted using it everywhere, and it helps make pop what are supposed to be 'ill-defined border' structures just work well.

xXDeceptiveDisaster In reply to PlayfulElegy [2014-04-27 07:47:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, if you make the lines too small and not really defined well, you're going to come across that.;; So make sure that not only should the lines be pretty wide but that they're not cluttered with anything else so it wont seem like a complete mess of clutter.

But good! You did the saturation/value swap as I showed! At least that's going somewhere, you know?xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PlayfulElegy In reply to xXDeceptiveDisaster [2014-04-27 07:52:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeh, I actually used the Sat/Value swap for the lines and the Green/Blue/Value for the Shading. I'm still unsure on the luminosity factor, for creating metallic shine, but that's something I'll figure eventually.

And yeh, the colored lines will probably be something I reserve to Chibis, which should have more defined borders, Though I was struck with the color usage with another picture when I was looking for References for who the characters were transforming into: Β fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/201… Which really used the colored lines well to help define things that are fuzzy, shiny or lack true borders (so it may be best with things like lace, in future use myself)

xXDeceptiveDisaster In reply to PlayfulElegy [2014-04-27 09:32:02 +0000 UTC]

I usually use the luminosity layer to add shine to areas that are glowing or just to make it more 'anime'-esque. Again, there are some things that work better with other styles, so really, that's all up to you. But shining glossy areas like metal, yes, luminosity comes in handly.

Ahhhh I see!Yeah, colored lines are great definers against things that don't stand out as bold as other lines in drawings.:3

PlayfulElegy In reply to xXDeceptiveDisaster [2014-04-27 11:17:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeh, I was mostly just trying to figure out how to get that shine there, but all I got was the white splotch, which seemed odd. I'll have to look into that more.

And yeh, as a whole to me, it seems to be about 'definition', something that's got the fuzzy edges like cotton candy is probably going to better take to those lines than something with defined edges like a gobstopper.

Well the thing is, you gotta make pretty clean lines.lol VERY clean lines. And also, not only do you have to 'shine' the metal but you need to add, underneath that shine, a dark grey for shading, and blend the two evenly. It works all the time.

xDDDD Exactly!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PlayfulElegy In reply to xXDeceptiveDisaster [2014-04-29 19:42:45 +0000 UTC]

Ah, so how do you blend it if one is supposed to be on a luminosity layer? (And that makes sense, in regards to clean lines. Mine are still a little rough, but they are getting better; I should try to find the curve/line tool and use that)

Yeh, Painting techniques always the bed.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xXDeceptiveDisaster In reply to PlayfulElegy [2014-04-29 19:53:16 +0000 UTC]

If you blend, just use blur accordingly. However, I would be cautious using blur because you can completely blur out the shine, so set the blur density to about maybe 75%?(play around with it to see how it works in your hand because I have it set to a certain percentage myself, and I don't know if it would work for you). That way, when you do blur it, it leaves a clean streak yet it blends perfectly.

Exactly!

PlayfulElegy In reply to xXDeceptiveDisaster [2014-04-29 19:55:08 +0000 UTC]

Alright I was guessing it was something like blur. I'll have to experiment with that later today.

Or if you have a stable tablet, then you can use the watertool, that works as well, with the right settings and all.

PlayfulElegy In reply to xXDeceptiveDisaster [2014-04-29 20:11:25 +0000 UTC]

Ah. Really, I think I should try and find samples of metal surfaces that are doing what I intend to show to try and figure this out.

Yeah, just practice around with the brushes until you're comfortable. ;v;

PlayfulElegy In reply to xXDeceptiveDisaster [2014-04-29 20:55:59 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. The main thing is I'm sure I know how the brushes work in this regard, it's just geting the eye for that metal coloring, but yeh.
