Except Obama is not a racist. I LOVE FDR but he does have the major fault of racism.

Even if he was still alive (and capable), he wouldn't be allowed as president. It's all the 22nd Amendment's fault. (It's not realy a bad amendment though....)

In fairness, I don't think FDR would be any more successful than Obama today. I think Roosevelt benefited better from the fact he inherited Harding and Coolidge's mess. I mean, sure Hoover was the President, but he and Roosevelt were both entirely clueless on how to fix the situation. Hell, some of the New Deal programs were originally Hoover's idea. All the same though, Roosevelt was a better communicator than Hoover was, he didn't sound like he was an auctioneer

As for Obama? Well... I'm iffy on voting for him. I voted McCain last time only because I THOUGHT I was voting for the man with more experience. But hearing Palin? Well... that was an "oh god... what have I done!?" moment. But all the same, I gave Obama a fair chance, after all I didn't vote for him, but I believe he deserved a fair chance all the same. He's done some things I like, but otherwise, I have to say he's disappointing.

Now, granted, I'm a New Deal supporter as well, so y'know... well... Iunno :I

Who is the other guy in the white suit? Any idea?

bluessaurus In reply to poasterchild [2012-05-06 17:26:58 +0000 UTC]

The other guy is the brazilian president Getulio Vargas [link] .
This painting is a reproduction of a pic taken in 1943, when FDR met with Vargas in Natal (northeastern Brazil) to inspect the American air and naval bases located in the region to fight the Germans.
Brazil declared war against Germany in 1942, and two years later a division of the Brazilian army fought in northern Italy as part of the Fifth U.S. Army (General Mark W. Clark) [link] .

Thanks so much. I never knew anything about US WW2 involvement in Latin America. Guys knew how to dress in those days.

bluessaurus In reply to poasterchild [2012-05-06 18:32:30 +0000 UTC]

It was an age of elegance, indeed.
You are right, the involvement of South American countries in World War II had various shades - Brazilian fighting in Europe, Mexicans in the Philippines, the rest of the continent 'supporting' Germany (without actually doing anything) ... and so on.
There are many unexplored fields for historians, for many years.

Now there's a President who knew how to get stuff done. It seems like the quality of our politicians has only gotten worse over the years. Then again Clinton was pretty good, so maybe it's just the Republicans who seem to be lowering the bar with every passing election. *shrugs*

Awesome poster and thanks for sharing.

Epic poster! >:3

Seriously, FDR would be a welcome addition to the White House once again. I like Obama and all especially since he's sorta becoming the angry black man he didn't want to become, but overall, it might be too little too late for him. I sorta think we may see a viable third party come in if it's Rocky Anderson with his Justice Party. Just thinking out loud though

Dravazed [2012-05-01 14:28:34 +0000 UTC]

FDR was very pragmatic; a key piece of his political success was the segregationist South--which he did nothing to change. We need to talk about this...I understand your point very well, but if I were to say "Prefer FDR to Obama..." there would be some valid comebacks along the line I just indicated. What do you think? p.s. I'm going up to Seattle for part of May Day, so there will be a time I don't get back to you. Have a safe one, companero.

poasterchild In reply to Dravazed [2012-05-01 14:37:41 +0000 UTC]

Everyone is a prisoner of the age in which they live. It is not correct to apply contemporary standards to the behavior of people of previous generations. If we did so, I wouldn't be able to quote Jefferson, Madison, Mason, Washington, or many of the other founders who while profound proponents of human rights also owned slaves. See my point?

I started the day phoning my Senators' offices and talking to nice young staff people about why it is so important for them to refuse to bring CISPA to a floor vote, and if it gets there, to vote against it. God, how I love the smell of agit-prop in the morning!

You be safe too and strike a blow for human rights and democracy!

Actually, that's bullshit. The recovery that his most important programs spurred was derailed when the reactionary Supreme Court struck down his most effective programs. It was moving forward again when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Try getting your history from someplace other than Rush Limbaugh and Faux News.

poasterchild In reply to Ephah [2012-05-01 07:23:47 +0000 UTC]

And he was great because he knew what he stood for, and wasn't afraid to take some lumps in the process. I, for one, would feel much better if the President would go on national TV and give the Rethuglicans a real verbal shellacking and then, most important, follow through with action. Start by messing with Federal spending in Congressional Districts controlled by the Tea Party types. Use his executive authority to side-step the SOBs. Get on their case and stay on it until they scream, "enough!" I've had enough of corporatist economics. Have you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ephah In reply to poasterchild [2012-05-01 15:48:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes! We need someone indeed like that. We need someone who has a backbone and is willing to risk his own reputation to put things back together and is not afraid to even shout and yell on national tv to tell corporations that we've had enough of their bull shit.

Also find a way to increase jobs or even start making a job work field. I'm tired of going around in goddamn circles hitting places over and over again. I'm so limited in work skills, everyone wants someone who has experiance and I barely have . .. . a years worth of work experiance. It pisses me off. "We want experianced workers," they say. Ugh, I want to tell one of them in the face, "How in hell am I to get experiance if I don't work?"

Not in that context but something close.

Brother O needs to get the message loud and clear: fight like you have a pair for civil liberties and economic justice or a lot of us who worked hard for you four years ago will just sit this one out and let the chips fall where they may.

This BS started with Slick Willie Clinton and the entire Coalition for a Democratic Majority which came to be after the Reagan landslide in 1980, the idea being that if the Democrats would just moderate a bit, they could still be competitive in national elections, especially in the South. Nice idea on paper, but look where it has gotten us: Wall Streeters totally running economic policy, and people who apparently served in the Waffen SS deciding this Administration's policy on civil liberties.

The situation will not improve until the President and his advisors come to understand that the most important part of his base is not going to work for him unless he starts acting like a real progressive.
