The quotation is a slightly altered version of the words Henry David Thoreau spoke to his friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson when Emerson came to visit Thoreau in jail, who was incarcerated for refusing to pay taxes that were to fund the Mexican-American War in the 1840s.
