Occupation: Handyman/Carpenter. He works from his workshop but takes calls from anywhere. He will travel pretty far for a fix and will ship stuff he makes all over Kalos.
Town of Residence: Lumiose City. (He lives out of his workshop, located on North Boulevard near the enterance to Route 16).
Appearance: True to his pokemon form, Kale is a big guy. He stands at 6’4” with a thick, bulky build. He’s pretty strong, but not necessarily ripped, mostly just a bit toned in the arms. He has very large, callused hands that are always rough and often covered in sawdust. He has a bit of a tired/grumpy look to him a lot of the time, but that’s not necessarily indicative of his mood, he just often appears that way. He has sharp facial features and a pretty square jaw. His hair is long, thick, and silky, reaching his mid back. He usually clips it back with hairclips and puts it up in a ponytail when he works. He likes to dress very comfortably, in soft shirts and cargo pants/shorts. He wears sandals when just walking around, but in the shop he wears close-toed shoes (safety first!). His skin is naturally tanned and his eyes are dark and sharp. He has a good amount of scars all over from being beat on a lot as a pokemon, but none all that prominent or memorable. He is pretty much always wearing a hearing aid in his right ear. He has one for his left as well, but does not always wear that one.
Height: 6’4”
Personals
Personality:
Diligent || Passionate || Handy || Impatient || Indelicate || Sociable || Generous || Active
Diligent || Passionate || Handy: Kale feels very strongly about his work. He might not call himself this, but he is a master wood-worker. He feels very strongly about the quality of his work and about the artistry in his craft. He works a lot, which is why he often looks tired or fatigued, but he tends to be very happy when he is working. He can lose himself in his work and the drone of loud power tools allows him to completely forget about his disability, because it is inconsequential to his crafting ability. He will talk to you endlessly about carpentry and wood if you let him. He knows a lot about handy things, mostly with carpentry but he is decent at problem solving plumbing and electrical work as well. He knows nothing about cars, however.
Impatient || Indelicate: Kale hates when others try to slow down for him or treat him in some way differently because he has trouble hearing. If he misses something someone says, he tends to just let it go because he doesn’t want people to repeat things for him. Despite really enjoying talking to others, he can get frustrated easily because communicating is more difficult for him. He has all the patience in the world, however, for kids. Because he cannot hear all the intricacies of intonation, Kale sometimes misses social cues. As a result, he can seem insensitive or bold or harsh. It’s unintentional for the most part, but he can be rather frank. He has gotten good at inferring from facial expressions, but he still can sometimes say inappropriate things at inappropriate times. He also is bad with keeping his voice at appropriate volumes. If he is angry he yells and it’s rather terrifying. He also laughs really loud.
Sociable || Generous: Having not really gotten to interact much with others when he was a pokemon, Kale loves to meet new people and socialize even if he’s not necessarily the best at it. He can be a bit awkward but he’s pretty much always genuine. He also is willing to spend a lot of time on someone, whether that’s talking to them or doing something for them, like fixing something or making something. He doesn’t often say no to people when they ask him for favors.
Active: Kale is not the type to go to the gym, but he loves to swim, and is a very strong swimmer. He also goes for a jog pretty much every morning, even if he’s not fast, he likes taking in nature when he runs. He is happiest and feels best when it is sunny outside and he is doing some sort of activity.
History:
Kale was born partially deaf, and it constantly caused problems for him during his life as a pokemon. He and his parents lived in Hoenn, his father being a runaway starter pokemon from the region. His parents tried to protect him and make him stronger so he could protect himself, but they really could only do so much. He grew well enough, and he was good at watching out for his younger siblings, keeping them entertained and keeping them from fighting, but because he couldn’t hear, he was easily sneaked up on. Eventually, this resulted in him being snuck up on and captured. However, the trainer that originally caught him soon released him because he thought he was a disobedient pokemon. Because of his disability, he actually just never heard his trainer’s commands.
This capture and subsequent release established a pattern. Kale was often attacked or captured because he never heard the trainers coming. Anyone that captured him would trade him away or abandon him upon finding out he basically couldn’t battle. This made Kale very bitter towards humans and eventually come to hate them and how he was treated by them when he was seen to have no value. He traded hands so many times he lost count how many trainers had used him.
He was eventually traded to a trainer in Kalos as an “exotic pokemon” and he was then kept less for battle and more for prestige purposes. Insulted that he was being treated as a trophy, Kale ran away (which was easier said than done for a pokemon of his size).
Out in the wild of Kalos, Kale was inspired by the beauty of the region and took to losing himself in the nature around him. He helped other pokemon when he could, as he missed having his siblings to look after, but he could never spend a lot of time with other pokemon because he still could not communicate with them well. So, for a long time, Kale was alone. He trained so that he could not be taken advantage of as easily, and he became good at intimidating trainers.
One day, Kale decided that he wanted to take a trip to a beach. He had always loved salt air and crashing waves. He also enjoyed wading, as he couldn’t swim particularly well as a pokemon. So, Kale ventured to Ambrette town and the beaches there. He was enjoying the sun and the sand, wading in the shallows of the water, when he saw a pokemon thrashing about a bit farther out from shore. Wasting no time, Kale pushed his way to the pokemon, a Growlithe, and pulled the drowning pokemon out of the water.
He brought the Growlithe to shore, who then thanked him profusely. Kale nodded and smiled, although he wasn’t 100% sure what she was saying. The Growlithe, however, then became frantic looking for something she had lost. Although he had no idea what she was looking for, he helped her look. He saw something odd be washed in by the waves, and brought it to her. The object, a Dittech, she had lost while she was swimming and that had caused her to change back into a pokemon while in the ocean.
As soon as she put the device back on, Kale watched the Growlithe change into a human female. He stumbled backwards and immediately went into defense mode. The girl tried to calm him and talk to him, but she finally recognized that he couldn’t hear her. She took off the Dittech and gave it to him.
“You need this more than me.” He didn’t know she said it, but the Growlithe smiled and left him with the Dittech.
When Kale figured out what the Dittech did, he wasn’t sure he wanted it, but he discovered the advantages of being disguised as a human. No one would try to attack of capture him now and he could explore more populated areas and interact with more people. As he began interacting with more people, others quickly diagnosed his deafness. One friendly stranger got him in to see a hearing specialist and he was prescribed the aids.
His world opened up after that. Although he was still bitter towards normal humans, being a pokehuman was a better way of life for him. He could finally hear moderately well and interact with others. He picked up lip reading quickly and he could be far more social than ever before. He discovered woodworking and his natural affinity for it early on in his human life and started making a living selling furniture and fixing roofs from town to town. Once he had enough money, he bought his own workplace in the city and continues his carpentry and handyman job from there.
Extras:
Kale is partially deaf. He is mostly deaf in his right ear. His left ear also has poor hearing, but it is significantly better than his right. He always wears an aid in the right, but sometimes doesn’t bother with the left.
He barely knows any sign language, because naturally, as a pokemon, he wouldn’t use that. He has gotten very good at reading lips however. He needs people to face him when speaking, and often will not acknowledge if he is called out to.
He is currently not affiliated with a gang, but if someone were to come up to him about joining Frou, his opinions about humans means he would probably join.
He loves loud music because it’s the easiest to hear and he can also feel it. When he’s working, he tends to listen to classic rock really loudly.
He has gotten fines and noise complaints often because of the power tools and loud music.
He always wears yellow hair clips when he clops his hair back, and they often have silly images or pieces on them. The one he wears most often is his banana clip
He loves trees
He loves trees a lot
He really likes kids and often makes wood toys for kids he sees around or who’s parents hire him for a job
He loves seafood and will only dress up if he’s going to a fancy restaurant for seafood/sushi
He wears thin-rimmed glasses when working on small parts or when doing measurements and calculations
He sleeps in a bed that he made in the back room of his work shop. He eventually bought the apartment above his workshop because the noise usually drove everyone away anyway, but he doesn’t bother going up there unless he needs to make food.
He has a bit of a speech impediment. He has a bit of a slur because he couldn’t hear well for much of his young life.
He has a low alcohol tolerance and gets really touchy feely when he’s drunk.
He’s a touchy-feely guy to begin with. He might invade your personal bubble.
Kale isn’t afraid of heights, but he does get a bit sick in planes and when he goes up too high.
Because of sweet scent, Kale always smells slightly perfumed
He takes really good care of his hair, but he has noticed people like touching and playing with it. He thinks it’s funny, so he lets them.
He has an old pick-up truck that he uses mainly for work but sometimes just to get away from the city.
User Info Time Zone: Eastern Standard Time, both when I’m in school and when I’m at home.
Chat Availability: I have a good amount of work during the school year, but I can usually find some time to respond to notes daily. There may be delay in responses. I tend to be better at responding to skype messages because I am consistently on skype. I not very good at finding time for big group roleplays, but I prefer smaller roleplays anyway.
Role-Play Example:
Excerpt from a Guild Wars 2 Roleplay
Nierium sat hunched over a mid-sized Sylvari-grown table in a more quiet and secluded part of the Grove. The springtime weather brought showers to Caledon, and though the Grove was mostly covered, it didn’t mean the stray raindrop never got through. Nierium’s normally wide eyes were narrowed in focus as she attentively cleaned each part of the disassembled rifle that was strewn about the table.
As Nierium finished cleaning and began to reassemble her rifle, she decided to fiddle with the action of the rifle, seeing if she couldn’t decrease both reload and release time to make for a quicker shot. Her focus tightened as she delved into more technical work, adjusting and reshaping parts with her tool kit to improve efficiency. She murmured quietly to herself as she worked, doing calculations and measurements under her breath to ensure accuracy.
As she worked, the light shower of rain gave way to a stronger downpour. The small amount of leakage into the Grove increased, and a large leaf above Nieri’s head filled with rainwater. As the greenery overflowed, rainwater rolled off the surface of the leaf and dripped down onto the hard-working Sylvari’s head. The first drop went largely unnoticed, however, as a steady stream of rainwater dripped onto Nieri’s head, her focus broke. “Thorns!” she hissed as her hand slipped with the small torch she was using to warm and warp the metal. She lightly sucked on her now burnt finger and quickly put out the torch.
