I finally read through the silmarillion, and the lost tales ect. I also re read the hobbit, and started on LOTR. Did you know that gandalf was originally going to be a midget? I think Tolkien figured that making him an old man was bad enough for a god.
Gandalf is a miar, or a demi-god, like sauron (although gandalf feared to come to middle earth to face him). And on top of that they sent him in as an old man who wasn't aloud to use force to bend the will of men and elves. There where three sent to the west of middle earth(gandalf, saruman, radagast), and several more sent to the south and the east (there names do not appear any where)
I could go on forever. If you love lord of the rings you have to read the silmarillion.
