I don't know, I really don't think he's all that versatile. I've seen him do the same creepy thing over and over for Tim Burton, be creepy AGAIN in things like 'From Hell' and 'Secret Window'(or whatever that film was called) or be Jack Sparrow... that's really it... I'm actually kinda pissed that he's playing the Hatter in
People like Alan Rickman, Hugh Laurie, Hugo Weaving, Heath Ledger, THEY'RE versatile.

Yeah, I guess you're right. He plays a lot of darker, Burtonesque (well, no, strike that. Burton.) roles, so those are a lot of the same style. People don't realize he can do a bit more than that so other directors cast him as a creepy, too. But if you think about it, he's pretty good at conveying other emotions- have you seen Benny and Joon?
