Description So, I've been learning how to do my own textures and such in DazStudio. I came upon that was perfect as drow skin, w/o being too cartoony like most "Drow" skins are when made for Daz/Poser/Etc. So, being happy and excited, I wanted to make something with a drow, but realized that I don't have any drow characters or know enough about them to really feel comfortable attempting something BIG. Then I remembered coming across Xull'rae ages ago in my looking at drow art [I actually found a couple the artists on my watch list that way, saw how great their artwork was and watched them! LOL]. And so yeah, I decided to try something with Xull'rae. She's the RPG character of *XullraeZauviir And even has her own fan club here on dA.

I feel I did a fairly ok job at getting her down. There are a couple small things wrong, but they were so small, that I didn't think it worth spending an hour cursing at the computer trying to fix these things and waiting another hour for the picture to re-render. LOL And if you just look at the picture as a whole, it's not really obvious either. Also, I know her eyebrows should be red, and I tried to change them the same way I did the eyelashes, but for some reason, it didn't work. I tried it several different ways, so beyond trying to paint them red in PaintShop post-render and screwing up, I just left it as is, with the circlet there, it's not really a big deal. The circlet is silver and so the eyebrows just kinda hide in there with it. I was VERY surprised I was able to get that strand to be silverish! I was afraid I was going to have to put two sets of hair [one red and one silverish] on her and sit there for a day or two clicking, moving, resizing, readjusting, until the silver hair poked out just right. But the hair I chose for her had a strand in just the right spot that was easy to change the color without fuss! That beyond anything else was my biggest worry, the hair. I knew I could manage everything else in the picture someway or another, it was the hair that I was afraid would give me the biggest trouble. LOL Turned out what gave me the biggest trouble what the spider bracelet. The controls for it are odd. On most props, clothing, and jewelry in DazStudio, you want to move it forward/backward you just move a little nob and it does it, same with up/down and side to side. When you do that with the nobs on the bracelet, it moves off in some bizzare direction that makes NO sense whatsoever. I had a matching necklace to go with it that I wanted to put around her waist so it would dangle just below her belly button, but once I got it sized just right and started to line it up, it started doing that weird motions that the bracelet would do, so I gave up on that, deleted it, and just left it with the spider bracelet. Then added all sorts of different lovely jewelry since she is supposed to love her sparklies

HUGE file, almost 7mb. It's 2345x3316 pixels in size which translates to almost 3 feet wide if it were printed up at it's true size. Took around an hour for it to render. My computer hated me, ALOT.

Second picture I've done

Xull'rae belongs to the lovely lady that created her :devxull'raezauviir:
The artwork is mine, with lots and lots of resources thanks to Daz and Renderosity.

Thank you! ^__^ Means a lot coming from you.

This was my first Xull'rae, and even though I didn't yet know her or have her down, this is still one of my fav ones of her I have done to date.

yes I can definitely see that she's evolved since then but its still a great image and easily recognizable. I would like to do a collab with you sometime if youre ever up to it. xullrae or not.

Totally agree with you on the cartoony drow skins. I've come up with a few myself, and I have to say, I really like how your character came out!

Thanks so very much!

Glad to come across someone who feels the same about drow skin too! I bought the Dark & Deadly drow bundle on daz a few months back, but didn't get around to testing it until recently, and was insanely disappointed that the skins were not as seen in the renders! They are pale and it's the settings of the lights that makes them all dark and shiny! I was so disappointed, and haven't even tried to do anything with it.

yeah, lighting is key for a lot of artist's skins, and there are a few that I just can not get to work for me at all in DAZ, since they use Poser. That can be frustrating, but if you tweak ambient, and glossiness settings enough you can sometimes get them to work. It's annoying though!

Yeah, I try to make skins myself or darken it using the color thing on the textures tab in DAZ. It's more straight forward. Using the light to change the color almost feels like cheating, esp if the character is supposed to be something like a drow with dark skin and your staring at a character with pale skin. I may find a use for the skins from that pack though. ^_^

I used to do that, and sometimes still do (the color through daz thing) but sometimes I didn't like the way the 'normal' skin tone still was coming through, so I started taking them to photoshop and recoloring them that way. The lighting thing for me never worked out right, as it tints too much else lol

Holy cow this was a big file! It took me five minutes to download. But it was worth it though.

Little details don't matter when something comes from the heart,

This is a beautiful render of my character. Her hair here is wonderfully done and stands out naturally. The jewelry is a great addition to her simple and modest nudity and the spider bracelet is so cool!

Thank you so much for this generous and beautiful gift!

Yeah, I tend to do them big. But I like it that way because it tends to mean better quality when turned into prints and it also means that if I for some odd reason decide I want it print in poster form [or even for who I made it for] I can have it printed that big w/o problem.

I tried to do my best to do her justice. I have a few characters of my own [not RPG] that I hold dear and have worked hard on and so I know that if I have someone do them for me, I want them to do the best they can at that time. So I put my best into Xull'rae. And she is a lovely character to do, vibrant and different from the regular drow. I wanted it to be all about her, not her outfit or anything else. I've seen lots of other pictures people did of her that are gorgeous, but the outfit or the background is so amazing too that it takes away from Xull'rae. Plus it was also about the skin. I've seen alot of drow skin for 3d programs that are too cartoonish because they're too purple or too black or too shiny. The skin was perfect and Xull'rae was the perfect model for it. Leave her as naked as possible but cover/hide what needed covered so I wouldn't have to use a warning. Add some bling since she does love her precious stones.

It was a pleasure to do her and I might do her at least once more.
