I dont think it looks like a railgun, but its not a bad design. Why are you use a display for ammunition on the holosight? You cant aim with it.

I like the texturing. hmm I would add some self-illuminating material to that 'screen' which show ammo or whatever 85 is. It looks now like a sticker

This is an awesome gun
But it doesn't really look like a "Railgun"
nonetheless

haha, thanks.. the concept artist named it "railgun" so I figured that's what it is.. to be honest I don't know what a railgun looks like.. I'm about to google it..

Well to me a railgun is a gun that accelerates an aluminum bullet using electric impulses, most likely resembling a rifle because the barrel needs to be sufficiently long to send enough electricity into the round. Then again this is a fictional gun, so It can be whatever it wants. kinda reminds me of the guns in Mass Effect for some reason though.

interesting.. hey where would I go to find more about a gun's anatomy? you seem to know how they work and stuff..

well for a start if you google "anatomy of a gun" ypu can find quite a few interesting images about how real guns are structured.

Most of my knowledge of guns comes from the fact that I used to use guns on a regular basis (My dad is real big on hunting ). That and the 2 week Gun Usage course thats mandatory here for a hunting license.

The most basic gun to learn from would be the Bolt Action rifle, the mechanism is quite simple to figure out. From there its easy to understand most other mechanisms since they're all based on it.

You'll learn how semi-automatic weapons and automatic weapons work fairly easily once you understand the lever action rifle

It would be far easier to explain this to you in a chat or over skype since I could link you to pertinent images and answer questions directly

looks good, the barrel could of used afew extra divisions tho cause its very noticeably a 10sided cylinder probably could of done with around 14. also a emmisive channel on the ammo counters and other lights would make it look more like a display

great observation, I agree I coulve maybe used 12-14 sides for the cylinder, haha..

and as for the emmissive map, I did create one, but I'm rendering in marmoset, I don't think they have an emmissive slot for the map, which sucks...

thanks for the crit, I really appreciate feedbacks like yours..

Okay, I've got to ask this, do you have any tips for modeling a gun like the one you did? I'm trying to make one myself for a game project I'm working on, but they all look like garbage!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

And awesome render!

start small, model the simplest gun you can find, then move up from there...

that's kinda how I did it.. small steps really get you far.. "eventually" haha

good luck.
