Hello, my dear, are you sad again? You don't have to answer, I can see it in your face. Your life must have been very difficult indeed. And now you're shedding your precious tears for what you've lost. Nevermind, I'll take away your tears, your sorrows will be mine, and your pain is now alien to you.
Don't worry, we all lose something we once treasured, it's part of life. My life was never covered in rose petals, either. Once upon a time, so long ago that no one would ever remember, I was as lost as you are now. Back then, we ran barefoot on the muddy sidewalk of the great city that now stands ruined in barren lands. We were poor, but honest and sinless, sincere and noble. Our king was kind and merciful, and even we were poor, we still could afford a sprig of grapes, a head of cheese, and a bottle of wine once a week.
I grew up without knowing sorrows among the white walls of this city. It was every kid dream to work in a palace, and when my sixteenth summer had passed, I went to see the father of the empire. Then, among the banners, I saw the king for the first time; he was so stately and noble, but cold. I saw that this man would sacrifice anything for the sake of people like me.
It was also the first time when I saw Rael. He was the son of the king, about my age, but unlike his father, he looked frail, sad, and destitute. Every step seemed to be an agony for him; looks like he could fall if he let go of his father's hem. Everyone seemed to notice it. Everyone except the king.
I was talented, and by the age of eighteen I was already a member of the royal guard, and after a while I joined king's personal escort. It seemed to me then that I had reached a permissible peak. But in the end I was placed in Rael's possession as his bodyguard.
He had grown into a handsome young man with soft white hair. Rael led a promiscuous life, wasting time on self-destruction. Money had liberated him. I watched him fall lower and lower into the abyss of his own vices. I watched him choke on his own vomit from drugs, I watched him wake up screaming, I saw his tears and insanity in the shards of broken dishes. I witnessed it all and couldn't do anything about his immoral tendencies.
But as time went on, I got to know this young man. He was terribly lonely, abandoned and lost. Rael began to trust me.Sometimes he couldn't get out of bed and just lay staring at the ceiling all day long. Then I would hold his hand and tell him what I'd seen in the royal guard. He said he liked my stories, they took his mind off things.
On one such night, Rael told me about what lurked behind the white walls of the castle. It was true that the king was willing to sacrifice absolutely everything for the prosperity of the city. Everything, including his own son. It wasn't the strength of his army, the fertility of his lands, and the wealth of his mines, but the sacrifices he made to the demon lords. And in his twenties, Rael must have become one of those sacrifices. He was raised like a pig for slaughter for the sake of people like me. Before his death, Rael wanted to try everything in this life. He was going to spend it vividly and without regret.
As he spoke, tears were streaming down his cheeks. And then I said to him, "I'll take away your tears, your sorrows will be mine, and your pain is now alien to you."

We ran, fighting our way through the crowd of my comrades, those with whom I had studied and grown up, whom I admired and respected. But we couldn't escape. I remember dying in the dark forest, holding my dear savior's bloody hand. The king's hounds thought we were dead, and left us to be devoured by demons, though it wasn't time for my sacrifice. They just didn't want a disobedient dog in the house.
Except we hadn't crossed the line from which there is no return. I endured and don't allow myself to move when I was buried alive. Somewhere under the thick layer of mud I heard the sound of a hundred horses.
In the morning, when all was quiet, I dug us out, breaking through the soil. But once white fortress had already been engulfed by flames. That night war broke out: demons looted and killed, they didn't care about status, knowledge or skill, they devoured everyone in a blind rage. My beloved knight bowed in sorrow, realizing that everyone he cared about were dead. Then in this field, under the rays of morning sun, I sang my first elegy of sorrow. Not for the citizens I didn't know, but for Rael's loss.
And this song I carry through the centuries, taking others griefs. It's my personal elegy for someone I will always love.
