Description i am Young and Ignorant
what will i write about?
what do i know of
Life and her mysteries?
NOTHING.
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

i have not felt Hemingway's Frustration
i have not known Steinbeck's Loneliness
i have not reveled in Byron's Passion
i have not suffered Tennyson's Loss
i have not had Austen's Joy

i have nothing.
nothing anyone wants to read, anyway.

when will IT come?
25?
35?
50?
can i wait so long?

if i wait, will i lose?
maybe someone else will come along
and beat me to the Punch
The Brilliant Idea
the IT i've been waiting for

by the time i live enough Experience
IT will all be gone
and there will be NOTHING left for me
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

This is *perfect*--the eternal writer's dilemma encapsulated!

I believe that Flora, in Cold Comfort Farm addressed much the same thing, when she explained, "Well, when I am fifty-three or so, I would like to write a novel as good as Persuasion, but with a modern setting, of course. For the next thirty years or so I shall be collecting material for it. If anyone asks me what I work at, I shall say, 'Collecting material'. No one can object to that. Besides, so I shall be."

(Have you read it? If not--you really should. Anyone who knows DH Lawrence, Austen, Tennyson and Steinbeck would get a kick out of its over the top satire. The movie's terrific--but it doesn't hold a candle to the book, for anyone really well-read. )

And "Bravo!" for the poem!
