A creature from a story my roommate is working on.

The Fyaar are bizarre and frightening creatures, composed almost entirely out of dark magic. The skull-like masks covering their faces are their only solid components, and are formed from coalesced magic and life force energy which is stolen from their prey. Removing a Fyaar's mask reveals nothing save for their disembodied eyes with their fell crimson glow, suspended in the roiling black cloud that forms the rest of their beings.

The Fyaar are not natural creatures. The species began as the result of a failed black magic experiment to create a tool for possession and interrogation. Their original intended purpose was to be able to synchronize with the psyche of the intended target to allow for remote control, and to sense their weaknesses. Unfortunately, the experiment backfired. Rather than the mindless drones originally intended, the magical energy went haywire, and the resulting entities took on a life and intelligence of their own, though the ability to possess and discern remained. They also gained the ability to cast powerful illusions and the capability of absorbing emotions from other life forms. All of this, combined with a highly-sadistic and cruel nature, makes these creatures terrifying indeed.

The Fyaar draw strength through feeding off of the fear of others; the more afraid their victim becomes, the more "food" it provides. They usually hunt in groups which primarily move around between dusk and dawn in search of lone victims. Once a target has been found, the Fyaar quickly surround their victims and probe their psyche to learn their fears, before using their powers to generate terrifying illusions and virtual realities based on what they have learned. The group then feeds off of the fear of their prey. While weak-willed individuals do not usually survive an attack, those with stronger spirits are sometimes taken by these creatures, which proceed to keep them captive and use them as "fear farms", subjecting them to repeated illusions over extended periods of time to maximize their output. Unlike most predators, the Fyaar do not act entirely on instinct or necessity. They truly seem to enjoy tormenting prey, and often terrorize victims with their illusions even after they have attained all of the energy they need simply for fun. This sadistic love of causing others pain is one of their most unsavory traits.

Wild Fyaar rarely use their possession powers, but those in the service of dark organizations make frequent use of it. To possess a target, a Fyaar will usually strike in private, forcing their masks over the target's faces as their dark essence streams inside to subdue the victim's consciousness. Though it is possible to repel such an attack, it takes great amounts of willpower, and the shock of the Fyaar's appearance is usually more than enough to destroy any resistance. Once a takeover is complete, the Fyaar will revert its mask to an ethereal state and draw it within the victim along with the rest of its being, though it may sometimes extrude it in a shadow image for brief periods. Removing a Fyaar from a possessed being against its will is very difficult, not to mention risky, as simply forcing them can cause significant mental damage to their victim. The best way is to use spells to weaken the Fyaar's magical energy, usually by draining it or targeting the energy signature rather than physical matter. As the creature loses strength, its hold will weaken and the being will begin to slip out of its target. Once its mask has become corporeal enough, it is possible to lift it away, thereby ending the Fyaar's influence. Such an "exorcism" requires considerable strength, as well as safeguards to prevent the Fyaar from destroying its victim's conscious.

Thanks! This thing was just a random idea, but my buddy John often finds ways of using my doodles in the stories he's writing. These things are a little darker than I normally do, but they're pretty fun, too!
