Serena risking her life to save Ash (and Pikachu) in hopes that UB-02 Absorption won't bring any more harm.-
I imagine if the second half of the Sun & Moon games have a much darker theme that the later episodes of the anime could too.

Based on the Pokedex entries on the official website & the trailer featuring the second Ultra Beasts. The Island Guardian's/Tapu's seem like they would be the only ones able to take on the Ultra Beasts. (The Ultra Beasts seem to be on a much higher level then regular pokemon).
So this scenario is pretty much after Ash & Serena fought using their own pokemon, but to no avail, and with the Tapu of the island having not shown up yet either. So all Serena can really do is reason with the Ultra Beast.
