The new game takes place in "Hawaii" sort of! n_n and it comes out 2 days before my birthday! Whoo~Anyway, I modeled it after the native Hawaiian owl, the Pueo. Pueo usually have dark black streaks around their eyes but I made this one darker cream colored to keep it looking like Rowlet. Pueo are small with compact bodies and round heads.
This was just a quick small watercolor. I know I messed up on his feet since Rowlet only has two toes facing forward and two facing back... which is a defining feature of birds in the parrot family only... >_>
Anyway, hope you enjoy! Who is picking which starter?

Owls' toes can rotate to form an X shape, which is similar to a parrots' foot shape, for easier prey-catching abilities. This means that they can position their feet to have either three toes in front and one in back, or two toes on each side of the foot.

The moment I saw rowlet I just knew you would draw it... I'm not dissapointed, the little guy came out very cute!
As for which starter I'm choosing, I'm planning on getting both sun and moon, so whichever one I play first will be with popplio since I have a tradition to always go with the water type when I play a region for the first time. In the other I'm going with rowlet because... well just look at it!

I love birds too much. They're so adorable and full of personality. Ironically a week before this was released we were driving home late at night and I thought I had spotted a huge barn owl hunting on the side of the road by my house. Which is weird since we live in the city. We looped back and sure enough it was a huge barn owl.
I need to paint Popplio as a Hawaiian Monk seal -they're so cute! n_n Litten idk, looks so grouchy.

Owls actually have zygozactyl feet (like woodpeckers, road runners, and even some other birds of prey, etc.), but can "switch" the fourth toe to be in the front - they mainly use the 2+2 arrangement to perch, and the 3+1 to catch prey, as far as I know!
So not only is your reconstruction here cute, it's not inaccurate as far as the real animal goes! Can't say for sure how it'll work in game though.

Didn't know that about their feet! I just see their claws when they're hunting and know that the 2+2 is a parrot thing. :3

Birds have... a lot of weird toe patterns, to say the least! x3 The 3+1 pattern is common for most "common" birds/songbirds, while the 2+2 is usually for perching differently (owls for some reason, roadrunners due to evolving from a bird like that, parrots for manipulation, woodpeckers for tree gripping, etc.), and that's not even getting into the waterfowl feet!
I've seen some rumors and convincing fakes, but I'm hoping it'll be unspoiled (at least for me) until I get the game! I'm going to get all of them regardless, through trading and whatnot, but I'm going to aim for the owl at first I think. It's waaay too cute to pass up, although I also feel bad for Popplio since everyone seems to hate it!

i'm hyped for alola too tbh, hoping we get cool pokemon stuff here!! like if pokemon go ever releases the other several hundred pokemon and if we could hike diamond head or something to find legendaries? that'd be RAD. or more merch. more merch is good. c:
rowlet is such a tiny bird child but... litten looks so edgy and it's what my character would want me to do, so...... litten it is. xP

Super weird because for the first time in YEARS a couple of weeks ago we were coming home at 2am and I remarked to my boyfriend "Hey, did you see that big owl sitting on the side of the road?" and he was like "Huh?" And it occurred to me that was strange, being that we live in Kahala area. We turned around to drive past and sure enough there was a huuuuge barn owl sitting on the side of the road running after bugs and stuff. Gotta love owls!
Litten is pretty fierce looking though...

That'd be awesome if so. I love the Harry Potter connection to owls, and I know the series was big in Japan.... of course I'm thrilled the new region is Hawaii/Okinawa esque.
