Description This is probably the portfolio piece that I'm most excited about, and definately had the most fun doing. I was my sculpting instructor's guinea pig this semester, so he could eventually pitch the idea of teaching a ZBrush class next semester.
I focused this semester on learning ZBrush, and I have to say.. it's SO rewarding learning to model your own characters in a 3D format. I'd definately like to continue my studies in ZBrush after I graduate
Enjoy!

i've got to say that i lol'd pretty hard when i saw this model xD, i love it. Im a fan of sharks and since i was a child, i loved to draw them. Great concept, looking this sharks from front is so funny xD

im learning zbrush too, and yeah, it IS rewarding watching ur own ideas being generated by 3d sculpting. Congratulations!

This is GREAT! I almost can't believe you sculpted it yourself, you zbrush pro, you!

But really, he's so cute! I love how you've managed to keep the appeal, I think a lot of times when people sculpt characters in 3d, something is always missing or off from the original design. Do you think you'll do more?

Thanks dude!! Yeah, I'm definately going to do more. I want to move onto a humanoid next.. just gotta learn how to set up a basic armature. Have you tried ZBrush?? You should if you haven't.. it's pretty freaking awesome, and pretty user friendly

Funny thing, actually. When I was in grade 8 I had downloaded a trial version and had modeled digimon and they were awesome, lol!! Well, they only made sense from one angle since I didn't know how to properly use the program, so I made it look good from one angle and took screenshots, haha. I wish I had those files now though.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing what else you do!

This is a great character design, its got a nice dynamic shape and a lot of emphasis on some really great features of a shark, plus the proportions are hilarious! I gather that this work is Zbrush work from start to finish? Typically the topology is very straight up and doesn't follow the shape of the face and key limbs, which is difficult to get past with Zbrush. Are you intending to use the character for animation? If not then this is great, otherwise i would recommend taking a look at ideal 3D facial topology and getting to grips with the flow of quads. Again really great design work and a satisfying transfer to 3D, solid work!

Polarkeet In reply to thinkubus [2011-04-12 02:37:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it was done all in ZBrush, I started with the sphere and just went from there. This was my first model, so I still have a LOT to learn! Yeah, the topology is pretty wacky on this.. there's two bad pinches (one at the base of the tail, one on the face) that I cleverly photoshopped I was going to put some simple bones in it and try to put him in some key poses, but I don't know what will happen.. I'm pretty sure he'll get wonky if I bring him into Maya, too. I need to take a legit ZBrush class and figure out how to set things up properly, but they are so dang expensive. For now, I have to settle with pestering my teacher to death.
Thank you for the notes!!

No problem! I wouldn't say you're in any great need of a class, you seem to know what you're doing. In fact if you have access to Maya, I would say it is well worth producing a low poly base mesh with a sound topological structure using Maya and then import that as a .obj into Zbrush and work your magic. Then regardless of how you sculpt it the topology should be good for posing/animating, Zbrush tends to keep things in good shape if there's a good starting point. Keep up the good work, as a first model this is pretty tasty, I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do!

Polarkeet In reply to thinkubus [2011-04-12 23:58:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh totally! I had heard of doing that before getting into ZBrush, but I was hesitant about importing/exporting things on my first go. I keep hearing that all the major studios work in low poly first, and then move onto the high poly fine details in ZBrush later. I'm definately going to check into that! Of course my ultimate goal is to have everything animate-able, so it makes much more sense to go the Maya route first rather than being clumsy about it in ZBrush, lol.
Thank you for the comments Do you have any models, or animation online? I'd love to see some of your work!

thinkubus In reply to Polarkeet [2011-04-13 19:58:44 +0000 UTC]

Aha! You have me! None of my work thus far be it Maya or Zbrush work is really worthy of putting up online, mostly due to my own laziness and the constraints of projects, I haven't done any work of my own fancy. There are a couple of things that I can put up but I just know that I can do an awful lot better and I wouldn't be justifying myself if I did.

As for animation I have a project from my second year which I directed, which is ok, its not exactly a CG artist's wet dream, its a bit abstract and experimental. Also there are some disappointing aspects to it (being a group project, there's always one idiot who is lazy and does a shit job, you'll see). I did a bunch of modelling and rigging for this project and the only animation I had to do was the kookaburra flying, so all in all not very much animation to speak of but without detailed explaination its difficult to see exactly what my work is like.

When I have some decent work I can let you know and you can have a look and see what you think! It's always great to see other people's work and of course share your work with other people. Here is the animation on youtube: [link]

HOLY COW that is freaking awesome!! That tempo is great, and the camera moves.. just wow! I have to say, you did a pretty spectacular job directing this, it's just beautiful. I think a lot of the success of a film is based on how well everyone's work merges together in the end, and this looks pretty darn seamless to me.
Did you guys use a soundtrack or record the didgeridoo players?

thinkubus In reply to Polarkeet [2011-04-13 21:32:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it, its great to get such enthusiastic and educated feedback! Yeah it flows quite smoothly I am pleased to say, we spent an awful lot of time storyboarding to get the animation working to the track (the track was recorded first). Its really important to take your time storyboarding, it really weens out all of the little inconsistencies and makes a strong foundation on which to work. Actually the soundtrack is all my own work, its just a single teak didge and a djembe drum that I borrowed from my housemate, plus a little Korg 4-track on which to record it all and it worked a charm, I actually wanted to take another shot at it and clean it up but we ran out of time, still I am very pleased with the final result!

Polarkeet In reply to doodle-bugz [2011-04-12 22:00:19 +0000 UTC]

It really depends on what you want to do with it. I sat down with my instructor for 20 minutes and had the basic body built by the time class was over.. around 3 hours. But there's a ton of ZBrush classes that will get into the nitty gritty of it all. Compared to Maya, it's like a walk in the park. Personally, I think it's super user friendly, and easy to pick up
