I mean in the episode we see the figures that turn into the gem mutation here it looks like we're getting a full view of their souls (?) and the excruciating pain they're going through.

Is that what Homeworld gems think fusion is? Being mashed together like some sort of nightmare Voltron? Although in some twisted way, their grotesque experiments on those shattered gems could be considered a symbol of hope. If the wrong gem shards can be fused together, doesn't that mean the RIGHT gem shards can be as well? Rose Quartz's fallen army could be reassembled and walk the earth once more....
