Description EDIT/// fixed contrast, I think?

Piece two in my nightmare-themed AP art concentration. :33

So like what I'm doing for these things is just straight illustrating my nightmares. If'n you don't know, I have like, chronic nightmares. Every night. Every single night. Actually, this one is based on one I had when I fell asleep in the middle of science. Apparently there was this dude and we were like, rebels or something, and they caught us and pulled his limbs off. It was really vivid but not realistic, in the most disturbing sense. His veins stretched and pulled, bright FF0000 red until then snapped like fruit gushers and sent splinters of bone and cartilage and chunks of meat down to a floor I couldn't see. He didn't stop screaming until I woke up.
Anyway, yeah, derp, I gotta turn this in in a few days so any critique is welcomed!!!

Your painting is improving, but keep anatomy and volume in mind. Avoid using tools that blur/smuge your values. Try to show a more definite light source, too. Your composition is a little heavy on the right, too. I'd either crop the figure down, or elongate the arm. You could also down the contrast on the figure, since that's what our eye immediately goes to (we, as a species, are REALLY attracted to contrast, arent we? e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>). I also feel like the background is a little too busy and distracting. Try to rely less on effects and paint your own backgrounds. It's very rewarding. I agree that the blue was a good option, however your value range, while very nice, has a lot of contrast that the veins do not, which busies the eye a bit much and is distracting. Does that make sense? The background is also a little too close in color to the blood/veins, so I'd definitely try and do something about that. But you've been making great strides, and this definitely gives off the feeling of a nightmare sequence.

Out of curiosity, what causes your nightmares? Medication? PTSD? Bipolar? I've worked with quite a few people who had chronic nightmares. One of them had nightmares so bad he developed PTSD over something that never even happened outside of a dream. Scary shit, and you have a way of letting us into your head to see just how scary it is. Nice work.

I didn't use any blur/smudge tools, cross my heart!

We're not really sure, my six-hour psychological is in a month or so though because I am not in 'immediate need.' So I guess when I finish with my psychiatrists, psychologists and doctors someone will tell me. :/

This is a very well done and vivid piece and I think that you should expect a high grade for it. Though unrealistic, your picture really sends shivers down the spine, and puts an unsettling but fascinating image in viewers minds.
The use of tone on the body works brilliantly on the blue, setting it apart from the rest of the picture and the sketchy style of shading contributes to the nightmarish feel. The icy blue gives the body a corpse-like effect, with the veins gushing out from the arms being the only sign of life, which, in itself is rather disturbing, as if they have a life of their own.
The veins, after breaking free of the arm, wrap themselves around the forearm, binding it giving the body a trapped look.
The fact that the veins have a lot of detail, with smaller veins very carefully drawn in, while the rest of the picture is fairly simple, adds to the dramatic effect very well, drawing your eyes to the gore.
One thing that I would say about this, though, is that in some places, the blood falls from the veins in a way that is not terribly realistic and is a little off colour, but this is fairly difficult to notice unless you look really closely, so does not matter too much.
Overall, I think that this is a brilliant piece that is delightfully gory, while not being disgusting, though I feel sorry for you having a dream like that.
This picture is truly brilliant.

Ouch, looks and sounds painful D:.
Also, every night? You sure you don't watch or play any scary things? What I mean is, maybe you watch something that has subliminal messages in them or something?

Really? I never dream at all.

Well, a little bit.

I really like this, the cartilage and the tendrils are amazing. I think it would be cool if you made the arm look a little more "stretched".

Oh wow, this is beautiful
-is very morbid-

Last year, I saw some pieces in my sculpting class from a kid who also chose nightmares as their concentration: but seeing this is really different from the childhood nightmares he created.
The drak terror that this exemplifies is truly beautiful, I'm drawn in to this piece and craving moar~

sorry bout the nightmares though, that's got to suck . . . . . . even though I love things like that ;w;

I really like it and wanna see your nightmares just to actually see since even the most perfect artist still will lose part of it in transition but it sounds like an amazing (but terrifying experience). Definitely gives a "wow" moment. If that teacher still gives you a low grade, you need to march around going "Haters gonna hate" with a big, hearty laugh and forget that teacher's opinion (if you can find a way around that)

Nightmares are so interesting to me. I didn't have the extra class space to take AP Psychology, but I've went and researched a few things in my free time. Dreams in general are really powerful, enough to cause physical changes in people.

I'll be sure to write a critique once I have enough time to later tonight~

That's..... That's just amazing. I love the textures and coloring on this, it reminds me of bloody lizard-tails..... I've though of those before, and they're kind of... They interest me. I don't know why. But this is really awesome because of the shading and stuff.... It scares and facinates me all at once... Like imagining a full grown gorilla in a diper (I can't spell, sorry for that).

that's a pretty elaborate dream to have in science class...o__o when i fall asleep in school, i just dream that my math teacher is a gnome or a boy scout for some reason.

anyway, that's really awful that you have nightmares so often...D: you must have a lot of sleepless nights, huh?

Actually there really wasn't much to be elaborate about, basically it was just the pulling apart part. Besides, a normal dream will only last seven seconds.
