Description 3 and a half hour study from a live model
At the halfway point this one was just not working out, so I painted over everything I had done with big blocks of colour instead. And of course, that very simplified version was much more effective than what I had been noodling with for 2 hours. It's a lesson that I know in theory but somehow always forget to apply - get the big and simple things right before moving onto the details, because the details will never look right if the big shapes, colours, and values are wrong. Hopefully I can keep this in mind for my next painting session.

Feedback and critiques are always appreciated.

This turned out great, and you're right about keeping things simple! Great job seeing the big shapes and turning the form. Life drawing is so much fun

It would have been interesting to see what it looked like before you bold move.

I didn't save it right before I changed it, but I do have one saved image from the process. sta.sh/0lcrbr5ai25 This one shows the mistakes I was falling into - the planes of the face are not well defined and there's way too much value variation in the eye area. Not to mention the proportions are way off and the colours boring. Simplifying everything helps a lot...

What I think makes the biggest impact is that you removed the midrange values from the shadow. It really brings more depth to the piece.

Good job!

Absolutely -getting too fiddly in the shadows is a mistake I often make. Thanks
