Description So I was having one of those days where I was feeling down about my art, feeling like I couldn't paint anything without a reference. So I wanted to have a go at something 'big' and see how I went. It's pretty rough, and there are places where I think it's obvious my skills aren't up to scratch, but overall it is better than I thought I'd be able to do! It assures me that I am making progress and that my photo studies are going to help me work from imagination too.
No references used except for horse's pose: Bay Horse Rearing Stock
Let me know what you think! I always appreciate critiques and feedback on my art.

Sure, it's a little rough around the edges. It looks great when you look at it as a whole though! Certainly brings "fantasy" to mind

This is really sweet! The color scheme is utterly lovely! I adore all your small details! I love how your clouds look amazing! Your kingdom is amazing as well. I love the flag, and the trees off in the distance. but what i love even more than anything in this is the little riders off in the distance. besides the trees, these guys give SO much original feel and perspective to your work. Sometimes if the drawing isn't co-operating with you, its the little details that really bring it back to life. You've done an amazing job with this deary! If this location were real, i would total want to visit there on day. Amazing work!

I love this! The details don't bother me, I'm a big picture person and I love the painterly feel, the colors, the warm horse with the cool background, everything!

"My kingdom for a horse!"...Don't be to hard on yourself, everyone has those days every now and then.^^ There's nothing wrong with using references as they help you understand how things work/look. Sure it's a bit rough but it looks good start. Keep up the studies and don't loose hope, you'll be amazed at how much you can improve when you venture deeper into the fundamentals like perspective, color theory, anatomy etc etc. The studies also help you expand your visual library.

Thank you for the encouragement. I know it is good for me to use reference, especially at this early point in my learning, but sometimes it can get discouraging when I want to paint from my imagination and feel like I can't. I will definitely keep up my studies.

No problem. Keep on doing what you're doing and also try to study the fundamentals even more, this will be very beneficial in the long run. I totally know what you mean as I also struggle with drawing/painting from imagination, it's hard battle but it can be won. Don't give up. Good luck.

Thank you! May I ask, do you have any advice for how to work on my fundamentals? I do photo studies but I'm not sure how much it is helping me in terms of light and perspective especially. Colour and anatomy I can see picking up from photo studies, but the others I wonder about!

You're welcome. I would say start with the foundation perpsective and begin with simple forms like primitives and draw them in different angles following the rules of using vanishing points and whatnot. Try to learn 1 point, 2 point and 3 point perspectives. Also when working on evnironments it's very useful to draw small thumbnailsketches and silhouettes, same thing with characters. There's a ton of more things I could tell you but I think the best way to learn is to look at good examples. You should check out Andrew loomis books, they are great!
