Description Legend of Zelda Candle Holder
Materials Used: Glass, Copper Foil, 60/40 Solder, 50/50 Solder, Zinc Frame
About this Project: This was my first attempt as building 3D structures using the copper foil method. It was quite a challenge to put things together on a structural level as I ran into quite a few set backs and my temper started to flair up more than a few times in frustration. The result is passable (I suppose)… the big thing is that I learned a lot that I can apply to future projects.

That's so beautiful! And oh wow, I just noticed the piece of glass on the Link side that's got several different colors melted into it. I bet that thing looks amazing with a candle illuminating it in the dark.

Looks really effective- the colour of the glass is good- only probelm I can see is the front is much larger than the rest and some of the solder needs tidying up but it still looks good. well done!

Thanks! Yeah... the front was an after thought after a scoring accident to replace some broken pieces so once I got it all together I noticed that it didn't fit but I figured it would be good practice anyway.

What solder bits in particular do you think need some extra attention? I like to know these things for future reference on later projects.

Oh yeah its great practise.

The bits which stood out to me were on the second picture on the join between front and the tri-force it looks a bit lumpy- maybe if it was bigger it wouldn't be so noticeable.

Ah! Yeah learning how to build the seams in between two pieces and make it look smooth has been a nice challenge. I'm discovering that a lot that has to do with how well I've taped the pieces and how they meet in the finished product. My later attempts have been fitting together much smoother.

I also thinkits got to do with how well the pieces were cut and copper foiled- for example if they are cut well then they should fit well- but if not there will be a gap and the solder will look bigger...

I'm in no way an expert! Please carry on with your items I look forward to your new ideas!

Oh, that's awesome! Next up will be one of those windows from those Windwaker wallpaper right? ;D

My mom used to do stained glass stuff back when I was in my early teens. We have some nice lampshades and suncatchers. I only did some basic stuff.

Haha would you believe that I've spent time looking at them and debating it. I honestly think I would need a lot of time, glass and work with decorative soldering techniques before I would even think of attempting one of those... I would also have to go in and debate where I would need to add additional lines because of breakage issues, etc. maybe one day though XD

It's a lot of fun. If you still have all of the stuff at your house you should try it!

Heh, maybe I will. I'd probably enjoy it more now that I have a longer attention span than I did when I was 13. We'll have to make some workspace in the basement or somewhere first though.

Yeah I have a big table spread out with my grinder and work area so that is important. Make sure you have some really good ventilation for the soldering as well. The fume are really bad for you.

One of your best so far! I'd buy that!

Thanks! 3D stuff is a pain in the butt but I plan on making more because I like the challenge. I think up next I'm probably going to do some Pacman stuff... suggestion are welcome though

A Pacman one should be neat. But you know what would be even better? A Super Mario one! Go Nintendo

I may end up going with Mario instead.. the Pacman idea keeps coming up awkward when I sketch it out.

That's really good. :3 You definitely got the right kind of colors for it, and I like how you can see Link and the Triforce on both sides of him. I also have a thing for candles and candle holders, so you get extra points there. XD

It's really good that with each piece you make, you're able to learn more new things to apply to future projects.

I actually decided to make it specifically because of the sheet of green and golden/yellow colors that I had to work with. I had to fudge around with scraps for the rest of it but I think it turned out okay. Same here with the candle holders. I still need to pick up a candle that's smaller like that to test it out. Normally I buy the bigger ones in the glass containers

Yeah. I think it's loads of fun because of that aspect of it. I mean as much as I love drawing I just don't feel a solid sense of progress the way I do with glass construction... I mean with drawing I can look at it compared to others and go "oh, hey... that's better!" but I can't pick out where/why I am improving as easily. I've already started to get a better grip for how I need to size my pieces in order to get them to fit together better
