            They’ve been saying that it’s like any other kaiju. Just a big animal. But this thing’s no animal.

               Everyone calls it Godzilla… or Gojira. I’m not usually the superstitious type, but I’d say God left the gates of Hell open and let loose a demon. A bit of an understatement, now that I think of it.

               The other kaiju all have an aura to them. They make you feel a certain way. Mothra makes you feel peace. Rodan gives off a sense of fiery intensity. Anguirus gave you that feeling of childlike wonder. Of course, that wasn’t really what I was feeling when Godzilla flipped him on his back and disemboweled him. When it was over and morning finally came, you couldn’t even recognize him. Kaiju are tough… unnaturally so. Poor Anguirus was still alive when the sun rose. We put him down with a couple of artillery rounds, with him looking at us out of those sad, old eyes the whole time. It was like putting a dog down… no… an old friend. He never caused much trouble, kept to himself mostly. Ate a lot of trees. We’d grown up seeing him dozing off in the distance, exploring the immense burrows he dug into the hills. Now he’s being piled up in a landfill somewhere out west.

               Godzilla didn’t stop there.

               He went after Titanosaurus next. Disappeared off the radar, two days later a bloated, bloody mess had washed up on the shore. Took three weeks to clean up, and the surrounding coast will be irradiated for years to come.

               They found Manda floating in the middle of the Pacific last week. The head was missing. A month later Godzilla stormed Skull Island. He was after the Kongs, of course. They tried to stop him with an aerial assault. Usually missiles work. Not this time.

               Godzilla shrugged them off and proceeded to down the jets with some kind of shockwave. They sent reinforcements who met the same fate.

               He stayed there for a few days, which didn’t turn out well for the resident kaiju. They say that, after he left, the entire island smelled of blood.

               Scientists are saying that Godzilla is some kind of ancient apex predator, existing to keep the other monsters in check. Only thing is, he doesn’t eat them. He just rips them apart and flings the entrails into the surrounding architecture. Apparently he can breath fire or something. They call it atomic breath, but he doesn’t really need to use it. His teeth and claws do the job well enough.

               I heard something about the survivors of certain bombings saying they saw a monster. Shrouded in darkness, lumbering amidst the rubble. Its eyes were pure white, and it looked like a dinosaur. From a distance at least.

               I don’t think Godzilla is an animal. I don’t think he’s really a kaiju either. I don’t even think he’s of this world. Not an alien… something… else. I think he thrives off of violence and destruction. In the aftermath of the war there’s been a lot of that. He lives for it, and when there’s enough fire and carnage he awakes into the world. Right now he has the other kaiju to keep him occupied. He’s been systematically picking them off, one by one. I don’t think there’ll be any left when he’s done. A lot of people are going to be sad when Mothra and the rest of them bite the dust, but there’s no stopping this thing. They tried an atom bomb on him yesterday.

               Once the smoke cleared, he was still there. He had nearly doubled in size, and the skin between his armor plates had begun to glow… like fire. Once the other kaiju are all done for… he’ll probably go after us… and there’s no stopping him. I always thought that the beasts of Revelations were symbolic at best. Guess not.
