Description I find it exceedingly bizarre that ~Haruo tagged me for a pairing quiz right after I started this piece. Not only that, but these two are one of the pairs that kept reccurring for me. I have fanart of the other two (Ed and Winry and Molly and Steve) coming.

For the vast majority of you who do not recognize these two, they are the male and female lead of the manga Desert Coral. Naoto (the boy) is from our world, but gets summoned into a desert realm by Lusia. This is a very canon pairing, even though I haven't gotten to a point where they actually get together in the romantic sense yet. In the first chapter, as one reviewer put it, "the possibility of a Lusia-Naoto pairing is as subtle as a brick."

It's an excellent series, but the English publisher (ADV) SUCKS ROCKS. They haven't even acknowledged the existence of volumes four and five, and haven't updated their site in over a year. It vexes me severely.

In terms of the piece itself, it was another "halfway-oh-fuck" piece. Lusia is lit by three, count them, three light sources, so shading her hair was a major pain. Naoto was a bit of a pain to draw, mostly because I just don't draw guys very well, and partially because I couldn't find a good profile view of him. He still doesn't quite look like himself, and I was forced to make up an eye color for him because I was unable to figure out what his real eye color was. Ah well. Overall, the insane amount of work that I put into did pay off, even though the flames still irritate me for some reason.

11x14, my usual Sakura Technical pen outlines with Prismacolor Pencil shading on Bristol Board.

I've read two from the library and always wanted to have the volumes of Desert Coral I enjoy it a lot. This is an amazing art piece. But it's sad that lusia is using her energy to keep naoto in orgos, since she is a lucavifate.

Heh, thanks!

I'm glad to know the series ends well. Gives me another reason why I'm really considering trying to track down and order Japanese copies of volumes 4 and 5. It'll probably take me ages to get through them with the aid of dictionaries, but if the story's good, it'd be worth it. . .

I love this couple in the manga! They are so cute together ^^. And I loved it in volume 1 (?) when they woke up together!
Anyway, I love this picture. You did an especially good job on Lusia. Keep it up!

I don't know a lot about this manga, but I like the way you drew this. The coloring is the best part of it in my opinion. Good job.

Thanks! I kinda went crazy with it...Dunno why I thought three freakin' light sources was such a great idea...

And I'm not surprised you dont' know much about Desert Coral; it's pretty obscure. It's one of my personal faves though. I highly reccomend it, presuming you can put up with the lack of an English version of volumes four and five.

Beautiful!

I don't think I've ever heared of Desert Coral before, but it sounds interesting. How many volumes are out so far?

Poofiemus In reply to CyberGirlTara [2006-02-15 00:59:18 +0000 UTC]

Three in the US, five in Japan. Don't expect to see four and five out here anytime soon, though...US publisher's a bunch of flakes. >_<

Thanks for the fave!

So beautiful!!

WHY HAVEN'T MORE PEOPLE COMMENTED ON THIS?! *shot*

I remember you working on this, I still love her hair, and I'm less traumatized by the massive blushing now that I have had time to acclimate.

By the way, what is that boxy thing in the low center of the piccie? I never figured that out!

Really? For the longest time I could find the first and the third, but not the second! Have you tried to purchase the third online? I know that works. (Just to warn you, though, it's got a major cliffhanger ending, and, well...you already know about ADV's suckiness and how much it vexes me).

;o;!! Beautiful!
I have to admit, I didn't know anyone else out there was a fan of Desert Coral.
This piece just makes me giddy~ x3

There's a volume four and five?! o:
No wonder. I thought the ending of three was a bit... odd. xD;

Poofiemus In reply to Chinafuu [2006-01-29 03:39:03 +0000 UTC]

You're a fan, too?!? YAY!

Yeah, I was thrown by the end of volume three, too, so I stuck it into Google and found a page on a site that tracks this kind of crap. There I saw that volumes four and five were already published in Japan by May 2004, around the time that ADV published the English version of volume one, which makes their lack of acknowledgement even more inexcusable. >_<

I'm glad you like it! Thank you so much!!

Chinafuu In reply to Poofiemus [2006-01-29 03:41:32 +0000 UTC]

Wow. That's pretty lucky that you found the info.
I've been on several sites looking for anything about the series, and I could only find stuff on volume one. x____x;

Seems us fans are pretty rare though. I've only found one other person who knew the series and had read it. uu;

Poofiemus In reply to Chinafuu [2006-01-29 03:49:21 +0000 UTC]

I had to plug in "desert coral volume 4", I think, in order to dredge it up. That's also how I found ADV's denial, ADV's lack of site update, and the review with the "subtle as a brick" comment.

I think there are two primary reasons why we Desert Coral fans are such a rare breed. One is that there is no corresponding anime, which takes some of the allure away for certain lazy peoples and also removes that method of spreading it around. The second is that there is some kind of shortage of English volume two's. My aunt had to purchase it online to find it for me for Christmas. All the times I looked for it in the bookstore they had 1 and 3, but not two. Every single time. >_< Ah well.

You've found someone else who knows it?? Can you tell me who?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chinafuu In reply to Poofiemus [2006-01-29 03:56:25 +0000 UTC]

The other fan was on Gaia Online, and I'm afraid we only talked once. ;o; Sorry.

I was rather shocked to find 2 and 3 at the bookstore when I went back after buying volume 1. xD; I figured it was a dead series and that perhaps there was only one volume. Thankfully, I was wrong. :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Poofiemus In reply to Chinafuu [2006-01-29 04:20:24 +0000 UTC]

No, it's not a dead series, it's a so-flakey-they-ought-to-be-dead publisher. >_<

A friend of mine tracked down the ISBN numbers of the Japanese versions of 4 and 5; I'm hoping to find a way to track those down, and then maybe scanlate them once I start taking Japanese in college.
