I should mention that I meant to say that He-man was underground and in a cave, making drawing Castle Grayskull in the background weird.
The gray swirly thing was on a separate layer as well as the lightning bolts so the colorist would have easy access to to the art elements.
Here's a version of the page colored by a friend of mine, Mark Roberts. I love what he did with it!

Hey Kevin! Huge fan of your work, my man.
Thanks for the kind words! The gray fx was done with a lot of "distort" filters on random brush strokes, threshold-ed, cut and pasted and then repeat until the desired loopy, swirly effect is created.
The thought process was... hmmm, dunno. haha, I drew this last year so it's been a while. I remember wanting to draw the classic He-man shot from the cartoon with him in front of the castle gates and all that but since He-man's unground and I had to bang the page out in a couple hours, I opted for fast filters and lightning bolts and speedlines to create the nostagic effect, make it hopefully cool looking and hit that deadline.
That's actually most of my thought process these days. Hahaha

Totally hear ya on the deadline thing I just was wondering if that grey effect was something you did or the colorist did..it looks at first glance like zip a tone or something. I couldn't remember if that effect was in the comic...
greats stuff and the colors came out amazing.
