Description heyaaaaa... this is my first time making a tutorial
actually this is a mix of the making of a commission and a tutorial.

this tutorial is made in and for Adobe Photoshop CS, but i think lower version of PS still can use it because i didn't use any fancy brush to color.

Recommended for Photoshop 7+ and tablet users.

Mouse users can use this technique too only remember to use low opacity for shading. and set the Shape Dynamic Control to "Fade". Kinda hard to do, but still do-able.

NOTE: this technique can't be used on Black and/or White base color because the brush modes like multiply and screen wouldn't take any effect on black. better use middle value color as the base color for this technique.

Finished painting: [link]

NOTE: the brush size is specific for the drawing I used, but you may need to use a smaller or larger brush depending on your drawing.

Special thanks go to:
1. =Adiene for letting me use Jewel as the star of this gig.
2. ~Lillejord as my grammar editor and for did a test run on this tutorial!!!
if there's still any grammatical errors, i'm sorry, we're only human.

now enjoy this tutorial and believe me, you're only ONE COLOR AWAY TO BEAUTIFUL HAIR!!

are you using a tablet? you can try reducing the opacity to get smoother shading job. You can download the brush set I linked to in my other tutorial. The link is in the description.

This can actually be used in Photoshop Elements 5 (except for the smoothing part, but can always substitute ). I never thought about using multiply!! I wonder if this can be used on skin as well for the right effect.

Great tutorial!! This is actually making my life much easier (making my 1st attempt at digital painting. ).

i have a question... O.o, i tried making the brushes in the first step, but they dont come out looking like urs where u wrote "coloring brush" and "shading brush-hard" in red near the top, is it supposed to look exactly like that?

oh lol, thank u for replying but i figured it out, im using a tablet but since i was using a mouse to change the settings, that put the tablet on standby, and while in standby, it looked like a solid stroke, but when i moved the tablet pen, it fixed itself, so that was kinda fail on my part hahaha... excellent tutorial btw ^^

hey, very awesome tutorial!!
but..i just can't make a coloring brush >_< it seems i'm changing every setting like you did, but it still looks simply round. are you sure you make make brush like that??? thanks a ton!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

popnicute In reply to mone-y [2008-12-22 13:36:39 +0000 UTC]

do you have a tablet?

because it needs the tablet's pen pressure to make the brush fade out. if you're using a regular mouse, it has no pen pressure and you'll have to play with the brush opacity to get similar effect. more work, but still doable. i did have a painting done with a mouse before.

mone-y In reply to popnicute [2008-12-22 15:30:33 +0000 UTC]

no, i don't... well i suspected it's only possible to do beautiful artwork with a tablet, but i guess i'll have to try using a mouse...although i tryed oh so many times...well, anyways. thanks for advice ^^

I guess this won't work with elements 4.0.
i still might be able to use it I hope.

why not? i think what i used were pretty basic.. hmm.. hope you'll find the tools in element 4

FiveFourG4 In reply to popnicute [2008-05-07 01:03:10 +0000 UTC]

Well I still tried and it came out beautifully.
I thank you so much for the tutorial but yours turned out much cleaner and better.
All my brush options were really basic but it is just elements.
Thank you!!

i'm glad the tutorial works for you

i'm sure if you keep practicing you'd get better result in no time and it really is not the tools that make an artist it's how to be creative with the given tools. please don't focus on what you don't have.. but instead focus on finding solutions and how to make it work for you ^^

thanks for doing the tutorial! Very helpful!

but for some reason, I find it hard to make the strands look good. They always end up lookig like zebra stripe ^^"
Any advice?

Thanks again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

popnicute In reply to xCaramellex [2008-05-04 01:55:35 +0000 UTC]

try to lower the opacity so you'd get more subtle color changing strands. don't forget to play with the brush's size.. use 1-3 pt for individual strands.

i hope that helps! ^^

HeathelFuss [2008-04-23 07:53:53 +0000 UTC]

Hee, I do the multiply thing for the hair color as well,
So nice to see that someone else uses it. x3
But I didn't even think about erasing the rough ends and filling them in like strands,
And I keep forgetting about the Screen option. o____O
Most helpful tutorial indeed. >w<
