That was one of the big problems I had in the episode. Why didn't the tree just take on her own pony form?

Who ever said the tree even has a pony form it can appear as? Maybe the tree does not have a default physical form and just needs to copy the appearance of another being. Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe it wasn't strong enough yet to appear as a full pony, maybe this will happen in season 9. I can only guess.
Personally I hope the tree's real form is a taco that poops ice-cream.
