Description Submitted for the christians Christmas Contest.

We tend to forget just how amazing it must have been when the shepherds were visited by the angels. Every single time in the Bible when someone sees an angel, the angel has to say, "don't be afraid". This means that angels (not when disguised as humans) are glorious creatures, so radiant and powerful that we become deathly afraid (soldiers even fainted at the sight of them). In 2 Kings 19:35, God sent one angel to kill off over 180,000 Assyrian soldiers. Angels are capable of doing powerful things.

To have been surrounded by a multitude of angels and hear them sing must have been such a beautiful thing!

I've noticed that the popular impression of angels has been grossly skewed, so I thought I'd draw some angels myself to try and balance things out a little. ^^ The Bible really doesn't say a lot about angels, so literally the vast majority of the things we hear and read regarding angels have all been made up. We don't even know if their wings are actually made of feathers.

Here's a short article about angels:

Just to let you know not all angels have wings. Matter fact they're never described as winged creatures. But they appear as both as regular men or as shining men.. I know this because that's how the bible described them as awesome and awafully frightening. I also in saw them before . They are both fearful and yet nice looking. And their eyes glow like fire in a a fireplace. These pictures in my favorite list will give you the accurate pictures of the true living stars(angels). Yes because of their looks, I call them true living stars or holy shining ones, or shining ones of the Lord.

The Bible really has very little to say about angels; it only speaks of two types: Cherubim and Seraphim, and both types have wings:

Exodus:
25:20
37:9
1 Kings:
6:27
8:6
1 Chronicles
28:8
2 Chronicles
3:11-13
5:7, 8
Isaiah
6:2
8:8
Ezekiel
10

We know that they are superior to us (Psalm 8:5 and Hebrews 2:7,) can fly, and are very scary in their true form, because every time someone sees angels, they always have to say, "Do not be afraid". However, considering that people have unknowingly entertained angels (Hebrews 13:2), logically they must have a way to take on a shroud of humanity, of sorts, just like Jesus Himself did when He was born in human flesh. A notable example of this was when two angels visited Lot in Sodom. He wasn't afraid, rather, he offered to wash their feet in hospitality (Genesis 19:1-5). If Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), surely then angels are capable of disguising themselves as humans as well.

if I remember correctly I think Angel--> at least for English, used to mean Messenger.

If you would like some more information on angels, Isaiah  6 www.biblegateway.com/passage/?… is the vision of Isaiah where a seraphim/cherabim/angel burns his lips with the coal for God to forgive his sins. There's an awesome description of them. And when it says the house was filled with smoke, that means they were also surrounded in fire.

Thank you for the link

I remember reading in the past about how Lucifer was a covering cherubim (Ezekiel 28:14). Nowadays people sometimes tend to associate the word "cherub" with Cupid in Greek mythology, however the Bible describes angels in general as beautiful, even frightening beings, not cute and chubby!

Very nice!
I wonder sometimes what angel's wings really look like. I figure that feathers are the closest representation, but I wonder if it's more akin to light.
I'm working on a short story about an angel that forges halos. Of course, halos don't actually exist as we see them in pop culture, but I thought it would make an interesting story premise.
Anyways, have a Blessed Christmas!

Check out Isaiah 6, there's a description of them in the first half of the chapter.

yeah, I'm familiar with that passage and I just re-read it. What were you referring to specifically?
Seraphim seem to be different than the "average" angel. We see them assigned positions being before the throne at all times or guarding the gates of Eden. "Big Jobs". beyond that, who knows. We aren't told.
Also, this is told from Isaiah's eyes, not a proclamation of the Lord, so there's some "interpretation" by the viewer.

Cheers!

If that's your reasoning then the entire Bible would be written by "some interpretation" but all this Word is the Lord's word.
And it is a description of some angels. No, not all may look like this, but it is an awesome vision of at least what one of them looks like.

no no.. that isn't. You missed what I meant. There are some passages like the one mentioned and the visions on Ezekiel and the apostle John in the Revelation that we are told what is seen through their eyes and by how they interpreted it. You need to understand that they were seeing things so fantastic that they barely had words to describe what it was they were seeing. It wouldn't be any different if you or I saw the same things. Plus or minus, it doesn't matter. I don't believe the accounts given are faulty. There are a LOT of details left out of scripture. does it matter? no. Why? because it wouldn't push forward the point that God was trying to make.
All things lead to Christ. Little stuff like are the wings of angels really feathers or something that looks like feathers or if that was the closest thing that the prophets could identify it by simply doesn't matter. It's fun to muse over, but never having seen an angel in that form, I have to authority to speak by. ...not that anyone would believe me if I did.
Remember that angels are servants of the Lord, not much different an you or me. The watch us with puzzlement and those of us who believe, they also see their master (Christ).

It occurred to me when I was reading "This Present Darkness" years ago.
Frank Peretti used it but slightly differently.

this is lovely, I like the effects you used in the sky and the colored outlines of the angels soften them so they look like they're really emerging from it.

Thank you, that is the effect I was going for.
I love drawing, though I'm not very experienced, so it takes an effort to not scrap ideas for fear of people not "getting" them the way I intended them to.

maybe art is like prayer in that God knows exactly what you intend to say even if others find it cryptic ;D

do a search for "draw this again" here on the DA search engine and see how far people can come with practice, it's quite encouraging!
