This picture is very lovely and cute, but it doesn't seem very Dickon. Dickon is obsessed with life, with making things grow, with nurturing things that noone else will nurture, at one time Mary even wonders if he's a wood fairy. Going purely by the descriptions in the book, this actually seems more Mary/Colin than Mary/Dickon.
Having never seen the 1993 version, they probably would be very cute together. Dickon would keep Mary grounded and less likely to respond to her temper. Colin/Mary=tsundere love Dickon/Mary=marriage of opposites. Too cute.
Speaking of which, perhaps the perfect girl for Colin is Sarah Crewe... but Mary, Dickon, and Colin are better as a trio than 2 and 1.

When I was little, my grandma got us some Treasury of Illustrated Classics books, and The Secret Garden (an abdridged version) was one of them. And I always imagined that someday, Mary and Dickon would end up together.
I've never read the full book, but the other day I got to see the black and white version of the movie. Not once did it seem like Colin had "feelings" for Mary.
Reminded of the book I had as a child, I took it out and reread it. There was no Mary/Colin in there either.
Then I watched the 1993 film, and I have to say, I think there was a shipping war going on between the producers because there was stronger Mary/Dickon than I've ever seen AND there was one-sided Colin/Mary. And then in the sequel to that version, the Mary/Colin producers seem to have been die-for-our-ship type people, because they killed off Dickon in a war and married Colin and Mary. Bah. I still cannot see that happening- and I've never even read the real book!
I really liked the Mary/Dickon moments in the '93 version though; they were too cute!

Dickon/Mary just fit... even in the old film version, you could see possibilities with them.
Colin/Mary were more like siblings... (cousins to be exact) their love was pure, without the implication of romance... and nothing hinted that such would develop.
I hated that they killed Dickon off in that one... he was my favorite character.

I always had a mad theory that Dickon was a changeling/fairy child who wanted to see the world from the human side and so exchanged places with the Sowerbys' real child. At first it was fun but then, WWI happened. I think that instead of dying, Dickon just went back to whatever fairyland he came from and continued to watch over his friends from the other side.
This picture is really cute and sweet. I love how soft the colors are.

I know. I never was fond of that couple. I know cousins could marry in those days and in England, but I preferred Mary with Dickon.

I'm in love iwth the musical (it was the first one I was ever in). I saw the movie and I liked it, but I'm always going to picture the actors from our production as the characters...which I guess is why I like Colin...because my best friend played him! We've been acing together for 6 year now!
Anyway, this is really cute..definatle conveys "childhood sweetheart". And avoiding incest is always a good thing....

You're welcome.
Yes, I've always found that idea to be vcery disturbing...it's cool, even listening to the CD of the Broadway cast, you can hear the hint of atraction between Dickon and Mary.

Thanks.
It was just the right amount of love. I hate it when they make kids falling in love all dramatically... despite their age.

Thanks.
You should. It's such a sweet story. I think it's all on youtube, if you ever feel like browsing. Just search for "The Secret Garden 1993 Part", and it's there.

Thanks. Me too.
People are all like, "It's highly unlikely that she would marry Dickon, due to his poor class." But I'm like, "Mary's not shallow. She'd marry out of love, not for wealth."

I mean, she became a very loving girl when she met him. Plus, I read that in the book, she describes Dickon as "beautiful", and "like an angel." I think that's enough for her. Plus, she liked his animals.
