M1 Garand

The first semi-automatic rifle to be used as a standard-issue rifle, the M1 Garand acquired a legendary reputation from it's use by US forces during WW2. Designed to replace the Springfield M1903 rifles in US service and originally conceived to fire a proprietary intermediate cartridge, it was rechambered for .30-06 at the request of the army. The weapon quickly proved itself to be accurate and reliable, if heavy. It used an en-bloc clip system that greatly sped up empty reloads of the rifle, increasing it's rate of fire, though this caused issues for clip reloading. After WW2 it was quickly replaced by the M14 rifle, itself being essentially a modified Garand with a magazine and automatic fire. Thousands of military rifles were offloaded into the civilian market, where it has remained popular ever since.
Despite it's legendary reputation, the M1 rifle suffered from several issues that were carried into it's successor. It was quite heavy, produced a lot of muzzle flash as well as climb during recoil. It was prone to dirt and jamming thanks to the large open chamber on top of being unergonomic in contrast to the Springfield. Capping all of this off was the fact that the rifle was designed to fire an intermediate cartridge, but ultimately saddled with the overpowered .30-06 Springfield rounds that it was not prepared to use. It is more impressive perhaps, that despite these massive flaws, the Garand managed to become one of the most successful rifle designs of the 20th Century.
