Finished this, the Mark I Masamune, finally. Not happy with the results, been sick and took forever, plus it just looks sloppy. I was trying to make the blade with a much deeper curve than it would have if cut from a foot wide pine board, so I came up with a way of making the entire blade out of smaller pieces of wood. This version came out a bit thick, I'm working on a second that's more the size of a katana blade. It's well-balanced so you can wield it with one hand, it's just SO. DANG. BIG. 110" (inches) long, just over 9 feet.

My glue came undone in one of the wooden pieces, so the blade doesn't have as smooth a curve as I wanted. Front and back is reinforced with two eight foot long strips of oak. The tsuba is balsa; fuchi, habaki, and kashira are all resin putty. The tsuka's ray-skin wrap is faked using styrofoam that I molded in silicone after working it to a nice bumpy surface, then cast strips in resin. The blade is wood and filler, covered with foil tape since I couldn't get the paint to look good for some reason. The tape, however, "checked" and kinked because the blade is so long it likes to warp JUST enough to mess the tape up *sigh* The fake hamon edge is paint.

This was my favourite version of Sephiroth's sword from the games, although I really like the silver/steel versions in Crisis Core's gameplay and Kingdom Hearts. This one is from the Duel in the Lifestream. In the original game cutscenes showed this guard, or tsuba, in all black, but it would be different in the game model. I like this middle ground, with the black fittings, black handle, blood-red ito wrap on the grip, and deep curve.

The fantastic artists here have made many perfect versions of the royal purple and brass/gold Masamune from Advent Children, so I wanted to try something different and more "retro" since we're heading towards the Remake. I'm DYING *drops White Materia* to see what they do with the Masamune in the Remake, considering how the Buster Sword looks!
