Description Wow, a brand new work of art!

I received this amazing piece in my email inbox shortly after I got home from work this evening - and oh yes, it turned a reasonably good day into a great one for me! ^^

With the 4th Doctor well and truly established by this point in the 70s, and pulling in some massive audience figures (16.1m for the most-viewed first-broadcast of an episode, City of Death ep 4 - nerdiness xD), the Doctor was for the first time since his granddaughter left the TARDIS, to have a companion from his own home world.

Romanadvoratrelundar - Romana for short - was sent to the Doctor by the White Guardian to help him locate the 6 segments of the Key to Time, to help re-balance the universe and stop it from falling into chaos. Initially a very frosty, regal woman, this Time Lord (*ahem* Time Lady!) took none of the Doctor's rubbish and often knew as much as him, if not more, in any given situation. She graduated from the Time Lord Academy top of her class, whereas the Doctor scraped through with 51% on his second try.

K-9, of course, is another extremely well-known and much loved classic-era companion. Actually coming into the TARDIS while the Doctor was still travelling with Leela, K-9 was invented by a scientist in the year 5000 as his personal companion. Said scientist unfortunately died in a firefight that the Doctor couldn't prevent because he was performing brain surgery on himself (miniaturised, from the inside), and the Doctor basically inherited K-9 as a result. K-9 was a supercomputer in the robotic form of man's best friend, with built-in defensive capabilities (laser blaster in the nose, anyone?) and the ability to communicate with basically any computer made ever. Also quite snarky at times if he felt the Doctor was treating him like a pet rather than a companion. In his time on the show, the K-9 robot tended to get stuck a lot on uneven floors, and would sometimes do little in a story because of "low power" (an excuse to not have his laser always saving the day).
The original K-9 actually left the story with Leela, the two staying on Gallifrey after Leela fell in love with a Gallifreyan guard (really?), and so the Doctor built a replacement.

After resolving the Key to Time incident, Romana decided that she didn't like her current body very much, and just regenerated on a whim(!) into the younger, more petite Romana II. This Romana took part in a few of the most famous 4th Doctor stories of all - including Davros' first (miraculous) re-appearance in Destiny of the Daleks, The City of Death in which she wore the infamous schoolgirl uniform (above), and Shada, mostly famous for not actually being finished. xD Sad, as it was a really good story actually, and written by Douglas Adams.

The TARDIS ended up having three adventures in E-Space (basically a pocket universe connected to ours by something called a Charged Vacuum Emboitment (a wormhole?), where they met Adric (next commission), and then Romana decided to stay behind in E-Space and help some friendly aliens find a new world. The Doctor almost didn't let her go, until she decided to keep K-9 II with her for protection.

Apparently Romana eventually returned to "our" universe and to Gallifrey, where she became Lord High President sometime before the Time War. K-9 showed up again as well,...well, a K-9, at least.

I agree - the deep, rich purple of Romana I's suit especially is just beautiful.

K-9 and Romana were some pretty interesting companions.
Incidentally, I once read an eighth doctor novel where he meets Romana's third incarnation who has become a really terrible individual compared to her earlier incarnations. Apparently she abused her power as Lord High President and became a dictator of Gallifrey. As this was a novel rather than a TV episode I'm not sure how canon this depiction of what became of Romana is (though to be fair what is and isn't official canon in Doctor Who in general has never been entirely consistent).

Well, given that the Doctor took control of Gallifrey again, booted Rassilon out of power and off the planet, and then once again got in a TARDIS and ran off through the universe...maybe Romana somehow survived the Time War and could make amends for her previous life by helping to take charge and fix Gallifrey this time around?

And we all know what happened to K-9 (he got blown through a time-hole in the mid-21st century and starred in an Aussie-made spin-off supposedly set in London! )
