I love it!
I am glad you decided to upload this I don't think you have any reason to be so self-critical about your art. This looks great! And even if it doesn't match your idea of how you wanted it to look, don't let that discourage you It's a long journey but worth every moment. But instead of calling yourself a crappy artist, try to encourage yourself a bit instead
This drawing looks fantastic! You get the point across very nicely, the anatomy is very good and you seem to grasp very well the way clothes fold The expressions are very easy to read and I really like how you didn't just use their faces to show the expression and emotion, but including the body language as well!
I also admire that you chose such a difficult set of poses to draw. It shows that you have the artistic courage to step out of your comfort zone, that you are eager to learn and that you work hard to achieve what you want. You strike me as someone who doesn't give up easily. All the hard criticism towards yourself might perhaps be that some of the drawings feel a little challenging to complete? If so then that is not due to lack of skill or anything, it might actually be more that you draw very advanced drawings. A lot of times artists will make their drawings easier for themselves and find ways to avoid drawing parts they don't feel good or confident about drawing yet. Like, I used to hide feet and hands or just switch one pose into an easier pose sometimes if I felt that I wouldn't be able to draw it well enough.
Your drawing here, however, shows that you probably don't do that. You don't seem to avoid challenges or take shortcuts; I think this drawing looks like you already knew what you wanted everything to look like, and you didn't change it to be made easier for you. The hands and feet are visible, and even though Spike's hands are hidden that doesn't look like you were avoiding them at all because it fits the pose. He looks like he is supposed to hide his hands like that. The fact that you drew both characters fully visible from head to toe also emphasises that you don't avoid drawing something. You don't make things easier for yourself but focus on drawing it how you want it to look.
That, is impressive.
You stick to your idea and you follow through. You don't give up or do any half-assed attempts, and I admire you for that.
But all that makes it sound like a lot of hard work, completing each drawing. Don't drag yourself down because of that, but give yourself a pat on the back and compliment yourself for doing a good job.
You are doing the best you can at the moment. The best you can do now is not the best you'll ever be capable of, that goes for all of us, because today you are better at it than you were yesterday, and tomorrow you will be better at it than you were today, etc.. That does not mean yesterday's work was bad, nor today's work, it just means that you are good at what you do and you are only getting better
That's the great thing about art; you never get worse at it. Same with everything you practice, you only get better at it.
You show such talent and a huge potential already!
Please don't be too hard on yourself. Don't call your art crap, unless you draw a portrait of an actual piece of crap just kidding.. but you get my point, right? I'm not saying that you should never think that you could do better, but instead of beating yourself up about it try to encourage yourself and look optimistic about it instead. If you drew something that you didn't like, don't just say you didn't like it or feel bad about it. Try instead to take it as a sign that you have learned something new that you can add the next time you draw it. Try to figure out why it didn't look like you wanted it too and take it as a positive puzzle to solve; how would you have drawn it instead? Think about it, imagine how you would have wanted to draw it better, and then try drawing it like that the next time.
Like, I find shoes challenging to draw. I used to absolutely hate drawing shoes, among many other things. But why didn't I like the way they looked? Well, I thought, they looked too much like triangles. Well, then how do shoes really look? etc.. I tried paying more attention to shoes; being more aware of what they looked like. But also what they felt like, how they bent when I walked in them, how other people's shoes looked like when they walked in them, different types of shoes, etc... After paying more attention to these things, it was easier to visualise them and how to draw them before actually drawing them. Everything after that is just lots of practice. Reference photos are handy things when learning to draw something, but better yet is drawing from real life. Like in this example, not only could I wear different shoes to get a feeling of how they are, but I could see how they looked on others, and I could pick up a shoe to hold, get a close look at, and use my brain in different types of way to help get a "3D scan" of the item to look back at in my mind before drawing it.
..I hope this makes some sense everyone has their own methods though. And this was just an example.
Bottom line is;
I think you are a great artist. Your art shows huge potensial as well, so don't be too hard on yourself. Motivate and encourage yourself rather than pressuring and punishing yourself. It is a very common thing for artists to talk shit about their own art, we've all been there and many of us still are, we are our own worst critics after all. But that doesn't mean it's not ok to like your own art or compliment yourself on a job well done. In fact, I think it's a very healthy thing for us artists to allow ourselves to like what we create. And even if you can't bring yourself to like the whole piece, at least try to point out which parts you did do well at, or which you hate the least And take those positive experiences with you to the next drawing. We can always do better, but we don't have to stress about that. You are the artist, you decide how and when to reach your goals. Just never forget why you started drawing in the first place.
Just draw what you wanna draw and have fun ^__^
sorry about the long rant
But I think you did a great job on this, I really like your style, it's so cool to see my characters drawn like this
You are a great artist, and I hope you will share more of your work with us on deviantart in the future because I would love to see more and to watch your journey as an artist
