but one thing pokes me (hard) as being incorrect... the one side of his sling shot is extraordinarily long and the other side is very short (half the length or less) making it an impossible to shoot weapon

The trees are forming a compositional fram, which focuses the observers attention into the center, where the pipe is.
I think as well, that the dwraf's shadow could be a little darker.
