From behind a swatch of hilly swales echoed a silent trod- apart from the drip drop of a persistent rain the sole sound in the forlorn countryside. Swaying back and forth cross-legged in the saddle of a large armored steed, the equestrian slowly came into view: she was a delicate creature, luminous with a radiance of warmth and grace; yet her eyes denuded a tendency for mischief and unruliness that contradicted the general impression. Abruptly the dainty rider paused, listened attentively; she yanked the harnesses and ropes to cease motion, then dismounted suddenly, her decorated cape flapping in the watery wind of the mirk, and with haste tugged the stubborn horse into the vicinity of a derelict shrine encircled by a dense copse of elms, where the pair lay hidden like vagabonds.
