Description Entelodonts are reminiscent of wild boars, but are actually not believed to be direct relatives of pigs but are classified under the super family that included cetaceans. Entelodon was fairly large at 4 1/2 tall at the shoulder and 8 feet long. They had bulky bodies with long narrow legs each with two toes all designed for running. They had incisor and molars and large cheekbones. The long head was supported by a short strong and thick neck. Going form their teeth they were likely omnivores and possibly scavengers as well. They would have eaten tubers and root plant as well as any animal they could run down and probably not pass up an unattended carcass. They inhabited open forests and open plains and prairie. They were apex predators for much of their time and region, but Entelodon disappeared from Eurasia and Asia by the end of the Oligocene. Entelodonts in general, however, are known from Asia, Europe and North America from the late Eocene to the early Miocene.

Thanks for stopping by.

Nice work. I certainly wouldn't want to run into these guys on the open prairies any time soon.

Indeed, they were probably pretty nasty.

It's weird to think how much of the Cenozoic had hoofed mammals as the apex predators.

Never thought about that way, but quite true.

Actually, now that I think about it, we still have a couple: orcas and sperm whales, since whales are members of Artiodactyla.

Cool.

Are these two different species or just two different individuals of the same species.

Thanks. Same species. Slightly different sizes and slight variation on color.
