Description An attempt at a Plateosaurus sleeping in the sunlight of a Triassic forest, with its head resting on some mossy rocks. Still trying to correct the ridiculous imbalance between my abilities with just organisms by themselves, and scenes/landscapes. I think this is definitely an improvement from theΒ last forest scene I did , but there's such a long way to go. I'm continually trying to adjust things like my strategy and process, because the way I'm currently doing it doesn't seem to mesh with my usual process. I'm a "drawer" more than a painter, so I might try to go for a more detailed, yet less "busy" compositional style like that of the master, Doug Henderson. The other issue is I keep being way too ambitious, when I should probably start with simple, almost minimalist compositions and environments. Maybe something with only 1 big tree in it, as opposed to a lush and dense Triassic jungle. We'll see. Comment some concrete advice on doing scenes/landscapes if you have any!

I'm glad you can recognize your own flaws so easily and move to correct them. You'll get better with time, but given how long you've been drawing, you likely already know that.

Really beautiful to see sleeping dinosaurs. Is a behaviour not very portrayed in paleoart, so is fantastic to view a terrible lizard doing a "siesta".

I'm a drawer too so I can't help much, but as said below already painting is best done from back to foreground. I've heard that before too.

Β I must admit to being quite the admirer of a lovely, lush landscape (especially if I'm not the one who has to garden it).Β

Nice scene although I kinda liked the "older" one better, from a compositional point of view.
About the environment painting process
I always try to work from dark to light and from back- to foreground. So basically I establish a rough form, say a tree and than do the details like branches or leafs. After that I add light with variations of hue and value, depending on wheater its reflected light or you see the light shine through. Helps structurizing the process. You could also increase the level of detail in the foreground (unless you're going for some kind of a lens-effect) for a stronger feeling of depth.Β
It also helped a LOT to copy some artwork, I find James Gurneys or Simon Stalenhags art especiallyΒ usefull. But I also have a long way to go... So keep up the great work!

Plateosaurus is so underrated. In walking withbdinosaurs it only had like 2 minutes of screentime
