SEGA Heritage: Pt 1 - ToeJam & Earl

Alright, so I decided a couple of months back that I'd do a tribute to some of the lesser-known SEGA characters and the iconic ones as well. These are the characters that are considered to many to be Sega Heritage.

Toejam & Earl was a game I discovered 6 years ago through the magic of emulators and let me tell you, I had some fun times with these guys. I remember owning the second game on the Genesis but never touching it. I got it at a nearby Toys 'R Us back when Genesis games were in the sales bin and before they became treasures until the Virtual Console, XBLA, and PSN came into the light.

My main memories were with the first game via the Gens emulator. The random levels, the collect-a-thons and the soundtrack, oh man, was the soundtrack kicking! The main objective of the game was collecting the pieces of a rocket ship that crashed into Earth where everyone was either the Devil, a tourist, or some kind of human mutation. It was awesome.

My memories with the sequel are rather lukewarm. Yeah, it was a platformer, my favorite type of genre back then and still now, and it was still a collect-a-thon only this time, you're bottling up human tourists (literally). I was only a kid, so I never got past Level 3 of the game and really I had fonder memories with the first game which I never owned as a kid. Oh, there's also a third installment which I heard of but I was more into Nintendo when I found out so, I was like "Nope, it's on Xbox. Imma getting some SMA4!"

Oh, and what about the duo themselves? Well, they remind me of Duke Nukem: 90's-centric characters that were a parody of all the hippity-hoppin' characters in that era. I may be more of a Sonic guy, but ToeJam & Earl will always have a place in my heart as the duo with funk and style. Keep on jammin', brothers!

P.S. These guys need an All-Stars Racing comeback.

I owned both TJ & E 1 and 2, loved both of them to pieces. My copy of TJ & E 2 came with a fruit roll-up. Awesome!
