There are 8 Emeralds! Originally.....Shadow accidently ate the eighth one(brown) when on the ARK as a child. This gave him his modern look, strong Chaos moves and voice. How odd. I should make a pic of that.

As far as the main series post Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Genesis) is concerned, the Master Emerald is the eighth Chaos Emerald, at least that's how I see it. Although personally, I think they should've stuck with only six Chaos Emeralds like in the original and game gear titles (with the Master Emerald being the sixth and final one you get from most games' final or penultimate boss in the latter). That's how it is in my canon's back story at least, since it follows most of the early handhelds up to Blast (which "finalizes" their color, size and shape), but that's just me.

Actually in Sonic 3 & Knuckles on the Sega Genesis there ARE 8 emeralds: green, orange, pink, indigo, gray, red, blue and a pair of hidden yellow/ gold emeralds (one chaos and one super as per the other colors) which could only be accessed via the hidden level select/ sound test menu.
Sonic 3 alone also had the eighth chaos emerald (accessed the same way as before) but it appeared dark gray when you see it in the special stage.

I have. I know that there are only 7 Chaos Emeralds. In my series, Sonic and Tails, which is almost based on the games and among other series, it is revealed that there is an 8th Chaos Emerald after Shadow throws up a brown Emerald that he ate and absorbed it's powers during his years on the ARK. I made up the eighth one.

Don't get it. In every Sonic Games, I never seen Shadow ate an eighth Chaos Emerald.
