They had each other, but they have not seen other people or even other lifeforms since they departed from earth. But today is the day. Today is the day all their work lead towards. Today is the day the new colonists will arrive.
Just as the lonely figure in a bulky spacesuit is returning from its long and lonely walk over the dusty planes of Mars, the sky is torn apart by the flaming exhaust of the shiny ship that took on the long journey from home. It's truly a sight to behold
