Description Here's Martha, the final boss from "Combatribes" game by Technos. It's rare to have a female endboss and even more rare for one to not be completely ugly. This is a more stylized recreation of the pose she strikes when she makes her first appearance in the game. She's wearing the white pantyhose from the arcade version and not the green from the SNES port.

Combatribes was severely badass. I am surprised there isn't more Combatribes fan art on DA.

I'd like to see more fan art of it, too. Many of the enemy designs weren't as exciting as Final Fight or Streets of Rage, but there are some gems sprinkled through it like the G.Terror clowns and Salamander.

I loved the graphics of Combatribes. Lots of colorful characters. And that fat boss on level 1 just cracks me up. I even think Combatribes could have been a movie.

It's rare to see Combatribes fan art, but there it is.

Wow PrimeOp, that was one from my first SNES videogames ever played!!!

I never had the cart, but I rented it a few times. It's a cool game that doesn't get much attention.

Glad there's still people that appreciate the older 90's side scrolling beat'em ups. I honestly wish they'd keep making them but they've taken the backburner now that all these realistic 3d shooters have taken the fucking spotlight.

They can make a comeback, though. I remember when a lot of so-called experts said that the fighting game genre was "officially dead" about five or six years ago. It doesn't look so dead now. Hopefully, re-releases like the Simpsons arcade game will kick up the interest until someone comes up with a great formula to resurrect them.

Well from my understanding Technos went out a few years ago, and their game series, like Double Dragon, Battletoads and yes even Combatribes, have had many disputes over ownership rights and copyright. They probably do want to make new games but the problem is not an issue of not being interested , it is an issue of settling legal disputes of the ownership of the game, as the company that founded the Combatribes is officially dead, so the issue here is how do you contact a dead company to claim ownership when the ownership belongs to that company?

PrimeOp In reply to DukeMills [2012-02-20 19:50:57 +0000 UTC]

It's crazy, because someone usually has the rights once the company is gone. Data East's old games have a similar problem because there are a few that aren't owned by G-Mode or Paon.

Damn. That's one hard legal technicality to work around then

Thanks. There are usually at least 3 other people who draw fan art from an so-called obscure game that I've drawn from. I just made a quick search and the others just mention the game without being related to it. Weird.

Speaking of female last bosses, did you get a chance to play the Inframan videogame I made?

PrimeOp In reply to AppleBetty [2009-12-03 21:19:31 +0000 UTC]

DL'ed it but still haven't had a chance to play it. I'm saving it for when I can sit down and REALLY play and enjoy it and not just testing things in-between working on site updates. I'm forcing myself into one of those breaks this month so I'll finally get a chance to be Inframan

Then again that game is hard as bawls.

I noticed you didn't mention the silly last name. xP For the best, I'd say. Congrats on another awesome piece that's true to the original material and yet has your own artistic spin. Have to say, I love this "series".

PrimeOp In reply to mozzaratti [2009-04-13 14:49:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I couldn't use that name. That was ridiculous.

Thanks for the kind words on this and the series of old game characters. I'll be back at it again after I make some progress on a comic book.

I'm wondering if more people remember her from Berserker's line in the Combatribes advertisement/comic than the game she came from.

Your work never ceases to impress me, but looking at her in this pic, that whole cyborg angle actually seems more plausible with the electricity crackling around her. What was she like in-game anyway, besides the electricity being a different color? I've never played either versions of the Combatribes, and from what I've heard, neither the main protagonist (nor Blitz and Bullova) have any abilities apart from mundane attacks... But one of them is one rarely featured in any brawler besides Batman Returns for the SNES.

What you said about the ad/comic is probably what's up. That ad was everywhere!

I don't really remember her fighting style other than a kick and some sort of elbow thrust (I think). I don't think she shoots bolts or anything but she crackles with electricity as she fights.

Man. As always pimp tastic. I love her hair! All the colors are vibrant. It's top notch as ever!

PrimeOp In reply to ravensdojo [2009-04-13 14:52:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, man. Her hair in the game looked more like a swirly Super Saiyan hairdo but I changed that up too. The hair was fun to draw, not to color!

ha ha. I feel you on the hair thing. If i had a dollar for everytime my line art happy ass drew myself in to a coloring catastrophe. Oi vey. It happens too often.

WOW, another old game not many have played. Now that I think about it, you are right, there really are not many attractive female final bosses. Interesting.

It's always fun to mix things up a bit and draw characters that only a few people remember. Plus, this will be her profile art for a feature on ScrollBoss

Awesome as always dude!

And I agree with you about Martha being a rare kind of an endboss. Really, that something that you don't see very often in beat'em ups or even fighting games for that matter.

PrimeOp In reply to Shinjojin [2009-03-31 08:23:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Shinjojin!

It seems like Technos had done so much with beat-em-ups that they just decided to surprise players with Martha. Instead of the rescuing the blonde in the dress, she's trying to kill you. At least they tried to mix things up a bit!

Still can't believe she's a cyborg.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PrimeOp In reply to Lauren-Tyler [2009-03-31 08:06:44 +0000 UTC]

I always thought that was something tacked on in the SNES version. Even the Wikipedia article mentions how the cyborg angle first appears in the SNES version. Maybe they added it so people wouldn't feel bad about beating up a lady and that's how they got around Nintendo of America's "No hitting evil ladies" rule. Even the ad joked about that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lauren-Tyler In reply to PrimeOp [2009-04-01 03:37:23 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't be surprised with that. Nintendo of America was so 'squeaky clean.' Of course that all changed in 1994 after they lost big to Sega with Mortal Kombat. I still couldn't believe it, but it was true.

Thanks! Her electricity is colored differently in the game but didn't fit. I didn't want to use yellow because it'd blend in with her hair and brown electricity just doesn't make any damn sense.

Thanks! I wanted to make sure she looked powerful since she's the final boss of the game. I'm still trying to improve with the slightly warped perspective where it looks like the view is slightly looking up at the character even though it isn't an up-shot.
